Puma EGR valve contamination.
Since im on the mission of sorting out all the puma glitches/issues they have in their various form of modification or not and plan to share the info for all to read, my work has led me back again to the EGR valve for a deeper look.

Ive taken this EGR valve from a car that had only 12k on the clock, it was a untouched, un modifyed, un tuned car that had driveability isssues namley very slight "flat spots" on accelleration.

Now im not saying that all cars will be the same, and im well aware that landrover have since updated the EGR valves to address what i beleive is this same issue but some of your cars may have this problem unlerlined in the car.

The car had the normal type of faults EGR, turbo underboost , turbo over boost etc etc which really meant nothing as a fault goes. So me being me and as I wanted to get to the bottom it I started stripping various parts from the car making tests and investigations which is how i found this.

The first picture is of the valve gears, NOTE ive taken the middle ideler gear out on this picture, but more to the point note the "soot" in the valve body contaminating the internals.

The next picture is if the middle gear that i took out, you can see how much soot is on it where ive had my finder and its wiped off.

The next picture os of the casing top/ lid of the EGR valve wheir the connector goes, again note the soot build up inside.

And a close up of the contacts that connect to the motor terminals that feed it power.

Here is the motor terminals them selfs, also contaminated.

This soot is all inside the motor windings, on its contacts, clogging the gears etc etc how LandRover expected this thing to be reliable ill never know.

The Valve mechanism its self seems to work with the exception of it does not fully return closed under its own steam of which it seems to want to do with itsspring loaded action, it seems a bit catchy , i assume from the soot contamination. So its looking like even though the motor is commanded by the ecu it may not do what its supposed to because of all the crap inside.

Tomorrow ill strip it further and clean it out to see if i can make it work correctly again by just cleaning it.

Pete

This is indeed a very interesting finding.

I wonder now how this will affect the behaviour and flat spots Wink. Peter,

Thanks a lot for sharing Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

My car has that kind of symptoms as well and I've reported that to LR months ago, multiple times.

Problem is, no matter what, LR denies the problem and will not replace the EGR unless it breaks down Big Cry

EDIT: Things seem to have improved a lot in the past few months, actually, either I got used to it or it's no more as serious as it used to be... Rolling Eyes

Thanks Pete! Thumbs Up
I'm having a lot of problem with EGR and MAF in this period, I still don't know if everithing is depending only to EGR or both...

Tomorrow I'll go to my dealer for solve this problem, we see what they do.
In case they will change something, I'll ask them if they can leave me the broken one (but I don't think so because of warranty...) in order to have a look inside, my 110 has done 54.000 up to now. Matteo

So is doing what you have done i.e.; removing, taking apart, cleaning and reassemble of the egr a task we can do ourselves at home without fear of Censored it up?

whoever invented the EGR should be skinned alive. Evil or Very Mad

Is there anyway to prevent this kind of soot buildup in the EGR? How do we explain that it only happens on some Pumas and not others - mine is on 15000km and never had any flat spot issues? --

I suspect driving style, distance of journeys, fuel grade, exterior & engine temeperature all have a bearing on soot build-up?

From what Pete has shown in the kindly shared information, you can tell the motor is a standard DC motor, not a stepper. So the ECU can only set the EGR by using a length-of-time drive as their is no reference feedback? If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I think that the noise is simply the EGR valve being driven through a full movement cylce about three times in succession to try to prevent it seizing up. If it was well designed it would (a) be silent, and (b) not need to do this.

That's the sound of the gears grinding as the motor drives the gearbox to the end-stop! Big Cry If it ain't broke don't fix it!
