Thanks both - although if i said ignore the drop out issue - i mean it nicely Thumbs Up its definitely a mix of VF hardware and firmware - but its gone through all the technical support process and tests and im sick of it, beyond sick of it - VF have confirmed its the hardware - but im also not the only one...i could have it fixed in 10 seconds if i was allowed Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad - i can explain the saga if you want!

FTTC is what we are on

I used to be a network ICT dude and although that was 12years ago easy, i can still just about remember if i force myself

I'd be interested btw if you did want to vent some of the frustration and explain your saga.

Sad to hear a couple of others on here already echoing similar to my situation, Too far from the exchange for decent ADSL when that was the best, now too far from the cabinet for FTTC, and left with ADSL that is now in 2017 worse by a long way than it was 7 years ago, but bottom of the list for investment until post 2020.

Ive been through so many conversations with Openreach Trying to find the one person that can accept the simple fact that a connection that has degraded by 50% in speed and where latency has got to the point I cant stream a youtube vid never mind play a game online in the time we've been in this house MUST be a fault surely. But no, apparently. Neither is being disconnected repeatedly every time it rains so the DSLAM cripples our speed even more.

Worked out a rough price to have FTTP if they made it available as a product again , 17,500 pounds roughly at the 3.5k we are from the cabinet.

Gary

No idea who to recommend in your position MSE, I do wish you the best of luck tho.

Ill happily vent!

So bottom line VF dont let you use your own equipment. This was a loose policy when i joined which has become a HARD policy (it would seem) now

Joining them was a nightmare - but they made up for that and then things were ok...features on their router was poor and it wasnt anything special, but did most things...with some annoyances. One main issue was it wouldnt hold WIFI signal to devices when they went to sleep. There were other niggles but i forget

Anyway new router firmware brought with it more features, but also increased poor performance. The issues (ive sort of got to the bottom of - memory leakage etc) but the router would crash, freeze on top of a range of other issues.

Tests were done and a 2nd router sent - but the performance to get this 6 weeks and the process to activate it meant it stayed in the box.

Then it got worse, with slow throughput speeds due to packet loss etc - so whilst it would have a 76mb connection it would have mega slow loading on new sites etc etc again there were some other issues i forget, bu the router would freeze and require a hard reset etc or stop working on large downloads

Fast forward to a weeks or so ago and basically we had an entire day of no service. The router would disconnect then freeze then take ages to properly connect even though it had an exchange connection...we had a spare router from earlier so i suggested switching, which we did, but they couldnt get it to work fast forward from 1600 - 2300 of no connection and a router being a pain i suggested going back to router 1 this got us back on.

That router would freeze, disconnect, crash etc spending more time off than on. Move forward to high support calling we got router 2 alive and this was more stable as a device but still is having 8-20 disconnects a day.

Oh and i cant change its internal IP address without it crashing.

It would appear now im at the end of the saga that:
- a further firmware update causes these issues
- the router cant handle high demanding uses and many devices
- there are memory issues which when it gets to 85% utilisation it freezes and 90% stops when it gets to 100% it restarts and then takes 2-5 minutes to reconnect. But this new router hardware is better so it can manage that where as the older router with its memory leakage would brick itself

Again more detail im skipping through for speed

Turns out the more services you turn off eg DHCP, Upnp etc the better it runs - a few are running it effectively as a modem with a router to do all the work.

So top support monitored, tested etc the problem and can see its their hardware (its on the forums too now), they said they would like to give me the login details to use my own kit...that this would even solve it, but they cant (even though some people ages ago were allowed) and we go round in circles.

So its either turn off services to get stability or go and ive been allowed to leave early as they know its there fault...but they cant be bothered to implement the NO COST fix and give me log in details to use my own kit.

I think thats it - is simple, frustrating and pointless - not to mention silly

VF is Voafone BTW whoever asked

Oh and the comment with BT, thing is BT is not openreach and openreach run the infrastructure - i found that openreach treat paying people (eg other providers) better, actually better not to be with BT - who are the worst. Mike

Nightmare, I do fee lfor you despite being green with envy that you 'should' get a fast connection.

Odd you say BT are the worst mind you, as we've al;ways had bigger issues with other providers logging a fault than we have with BT internet who seem to just run throught the usual questions then punt it straight to openreach engineers.

Who then fail to do anything unless the lines physically broken in half 3 Landrovers

Thanks

I know its rich when im talking about 76mb connections and some people dont get that.

I suppose usable connection for us...which is down to one cheap hewaui box

I cant remember what was up with BT when we left but there was something that tipped us over the edge, although that might have been cost Mike

Virgin Media Business

A bit messy at setup but way more stable than BT Fibre Business

Hi Mike, I was with Zen (for phone and ADSL) for many years until recently, when we were lucky enough to have a new ISP come and put FTTP in our rural area (when BT told us they had no plans to ever upgrade us to FTTC!).
So I'm now lucky to be on fibre, but still use Zen for my web hosting (the cPanel thing, I'm not hugely technical).
Anyway, they were good at resolving a couple of minor issues along the way, including sorting out my PC when it turned out it was something that was nothing to do with their service.
I used their modem, but my own WiFi routers. At the time they gave the config for using your own modem, so hopefully that's still the case.
So can recommend them.

Do not be tempted to go for Daisy Broadband or any of the multitude of other names they might go under (fuel broadband, primus broadband, newcall telecom) they are hopeless! I am at the moment toying with the idea of changing but am worried that they are all as bad as each other. Latest fiasco - they have taken the monthly direct debit out 3 times on the same day. I phoned them up and they apologised and said the money would be back in my account the same day. It wasn't so today I phoned the bank and got reimbursed under the DD indemnity scheme.
They have sent me out a new router with instructions to fit it, I did, it didn't work, I phoned and was told oh it's not live yet! When it has broken, I have been fobbed off with twaddle like - you need to get a new splitter and would not believe me when I told them that my fibre connect has not and never has had one. We went weeks not being able to send emails from home!
I have heard a lot of good things about Zen and am thinking of giving them a go. At the moment i am tackling the switching of leccy and gas and losing the will to live on that one so the broadband will just have to wait.
Regards
Barbara
