I'm about to throw a recon R380 gearbox into the 110 and am struggling to get hold of MTF 94 gear oil to refill the box with. I've found one garage but it's a 3 hour round trip to Belfast to collect it. Shipping from England will take 5 days which is too long to wait really.
Several of the local motor-factors have recommended Autogear Power TX 75w 80, their computer system said it was a suitable replacement being a fully synthetic transmission oil, can anyone confirm? http://www.northsealubricants.com/media/Au...75W-80.pdf It appears to be a GL-5 which IIRC, can react to phospour bearings/bushes, is that a myth or truth? Having spent the money on a new box, i'd like to be sure its going to last! Thanks, Harry |

A fellow-member of one of the belgian clubs spoke highly to me about Castrol Transmax Z, which is a heavy duty Dexron ATFIII oil for automatic transmissions. The gearbox would run much cooler (measured with a sensor) and more silent, with slicker gearchanges. He also told that Dave of Ashcroft agreed with it being a suitable oil.
When doing some research, it struck me that there's quite a following in Germany too. However: there is discussion about it. Some people quickly returned to MTF94, others kept using Transmax Z. One of the cons would be that it is too fluid and too slippery for the syncromesh to work well. All in all, I decided to look further for MTF94 and wouldn't personally take the risk. On a side note: a couple of weeks ago I was looking for an alternative for PAS Cold Climate, and despite texaco being the manufacturer of the PAS Cold Climate fluid, their search engine (in Dutch here) gave Texamatic 4291 as a result for the Td5, and surprisingly not Cold Climate PAS Fluid. For the gearbox however, they still recommend MTF94- so apparently Texaco sees no alternative in their own range. Maybe this is telling for how specific MTF94 possibly is. Greetings, Joris |

I bought some Fuchs 'Sintofluid' I think it's called from Opie and had no issues, in an LT77 though.

i use Dexron ATFIII as per ashcroft recommendation. seems fine in mine, box isn't noisy!

Eventually managed to find a small garage/breakers 30 minutes away who were happy to pump a few litres of MTF into a bucket in exchange for beer tokens so good result 
Good to know however that Ashcrofts say ATF DIII can be used also. There seem to be mixed opinions regarding the use of ATF in R380 boxes but it's certainly easier to find. The Texaco MTF appears to be equivalent to 75W80 (albeit it GL-4 rather than 5) so it appears the motor factors were right in their recommendation after all! |

The brand "Carlube" are about the only people that supply it in Ireland if that's what country you are looking for it in?

Popped into several of the local motor factors on the West Coast and they all said they had stopped supplying Carlube for some reason. Managed to get a bit from a local LR repair shop to get on the road and ordered new stuff from the UK which arrived in 2 days |
