Never heard of the centre cap stuck solid before, they usually just pop off, I presume you have tried a thin flat bit screwdriver on one edge, try using a jewellers screwdriver and go round the complete edge in case some nutter in the past has used super glue to stick it in place.
When you do finally remove it just undo the centre nut but do not completely remove it then just pull by not completely removing the nut once loosened it will not fly off and hit you in the face then once loosened remove the nut and remove the wheel. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

As Gilarion says the badge should come out (I've never heard of one bonded in - it would be pointless) with the help of a flat screwdriver. The oval badge is larger than the bit you can see, and the edge of the badge goes underneath the lip of the hole in the wheel (it that makes sense) so insert the blade of the driver facing away from the centre of the wheel. You should be able to find the edge of the badge with the tip of the driver, then flip the handle of the screwdriver towards the rim of the wheel to get it under the badge (a diagram or video would help so much here!).
The important clue is that the lip of the hole in the wheel covers the rim of the badge, That type of flat wheel has no priovision for a steering wheel puller (I think the hideous "fake airbag" wheel has holes for a puller but may be wrong) so all you can do, again as Gilarion says, is loosen but don't remove the nut in the middle and then pull the wheel towards you. Often a combination of pulling and at the same time rattling your hands fore-and-aft will break it free. If that still doesn't shift it, get a helper to tap the back of the wheel while you pull it as hard as you can. When you fit your new boss, I recommend a smear of copperslip on the taper and splines, and do not overtighten the nut. The centre nut (like wheel nuts and spark plugs) is a popular one to overtighten, but the wheel is located by splines and the nut pulls onto a taper, so it really doesn't need to be very tight at all. |

I can still remember this struggle with my 300Tdi.
As already described, it is a hard plastic badge tucked under the lip on the wheel, which at the current winter temperatures, is quite stiff, too. First step would be to warm the area up with a hair dryer, and then use a plastic trim removal lever to tuck behind that lip. 1998 Tdi 90 SW, 2008 Td4 90 SW, 2012 2.2 90 SW, 2" raised Trailmaster/Terrafirma Heavy Track Raids, 255 MTīs, Recaro CSīs, anorak, wellingtons |

I had my steering wheel changed on a previously owned 300tdi when some tried to steal it. The garage rang me with the same problem, after they made enquiries it transpired that some 300tdi's had the badge bonded/glued in place but know one knew the reason why. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

If the wheel is stuck just loosen the nut off a bit then go for a drive around the block, that usually does it. Don't normally need a puller.

Nope
Just should pop off (use a flat head screw driver and a cloth so you don't damage the wheel) Big nut cannot remember size around 19mm and undo. Wheel just slides off. Make sure wheel currently is in centre, slide new boss on then wheel over and tighten bolt. I Had to do mine twice at in a straight line it was just a tiny bit off, but perfect now. Quick 5 min job. This may help showing the effort required to remove. If its stuck on for some reason double the effort ![]() |

Hello petestaunch
Think how good you'll feel when you finally get this wheel on... ![]() The advice so far is right...I had to replace one of these wheels on a 300tdi and it took some doing...mine was not bonded however, I really don't know why would would do that as the 'lap' over of the wheel moulding retaining the oval badge is easily enough to keep it in place. Gently go in with a flat (wide-ish) screwdriver and ease it out...one trick is to carefully heat the surrounding area with a hair dryer, this softens the plastic material and does help. Then you will be confronted with the Steering Wheel Nut, the Wheel integral Boss will all come off (hopfully)as you have read. A split Wheel and Boss arrangement (not what you are currently taking off but trying to put on) sometimes needs an extraction tool. My Startech original Boss did take a Puller to 'break' the joint, now replaced with a Snap Off Boss. ![]() Click image to enlarge Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

OK OK........
It's apparently a Mountney wheel. I did not know this when I bought it. The Springalex boss kit -just- fitted. The PCD101 dimension was correct but the contour of the wheel arms extending to the wheel meant I had to really screw it on to get it 'flat' if that makes sense. It's much smaller than the original wheel and it definitely makes driving more fun. Thanks again chaps. I will return for more elementary advice such as ' how do I put air in the tyres?' shortly. ![]() Click image to enlarge |

I quite like that wheel, it reminds me of early mk1 golf steering wheels. Ray
