Sounds like the classic symptoms of VCV valve Steve. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I was thinking that but wouldn't it be more of an issue regardless of temp or am I missing something?
Today, I cleared that DTC and all was perfect even whilst stone cold. (Recorded the DTC on paper though.) However, it is a bit of a warmer ambient temperature. The VCV is an incredibly annoying issue with no DTC's that it flags and is one of those "It maybe that, which is the issue, maybe not." This definitely seems to be triggered by the very cold weather, starter is working okay, battery is good condition too. As they aren't massively expensive I may get the glow plugs changed anyway as my 90 is reaching its 10th birthday now. And as far as I'm aware they are the original fit. I haven't got any EGR issues as it's electronically shut down and blanked. I will look into the VCV issues though, I know others have had this issue and again mine is the original. MAF and MAP sensors are too but no issues logged with those. WeWillWinπ¬π§πΊπΈ β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

Unlikely to be heater plugs, I think. VCV more likely, or poss fuel supply issues due to waxing.

Okay, so probably most likely VCV then.
I was surprised that they were not as expensive as I thought they were.. I'm fairly adept at the electronic side of things though no 'technician'. What diagnostics tool required for the pilot learn? Hs I know that needs to be done right away once swapped not driven. (AFAIK) Without looking at the WSM what exactly does that involve or is it automatic much like loading a map? Depending on what type of diagnostics your using, it's a straightforward re learning of programmed values.
5/10 mins should see you on your way. ![]() Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

Good to hear, that's what I mean.
Only tool I have is Alives's ATRIC so I can read fault codes, change maps etc. But that's it. What others are there? WeWillWinπ¬π§πΊπΈ β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

IID and MSV certainly do, Nanocom doesn't. Others I can't say.
Vehicle can be driven without but won't have optimum performance. |

Thank-you BW.
Used a Nanocom before but not the other two. So I suppose, it'd be possible to load standard map, change VCV, drive to dealer just for pilot learn. Come back then load tuned map. Then it should be just right. Does that sound okay? It's been fine today, noticed no issues at all but the ambient temp is warmer. (And I accidentally cycled glow plug warm up twice, normally do only once.) WeWillWinπ¬π§πΊπΈ β½οΈπ’οΈβοΈπ§°πͺ |

Yes, although I wouldn't change the map, it'll calibrate fine with the remap on. I have never taken the BAS map off mine when changing VCVs.

FWIW (lots?), Pete Bell recommends change back to standard map before learning procedures...
I initial thoughts was that learning should be done with the 150 map as this is what we would be driving, but on the other hand the learning procedures would have been designed to be done with a standard map and any learning done from that would be 'mapped over' with the remap. Sheesh, I don't think I'm going to be able to communicate what I mean unambiguously so perhaps all I can say is that with x,000 miles and no issues it must be proof enough right? (i.e. either way is fine) ![]() |

Trouble is with the standard map, my old egr will flag faults straight away as well as being blanked.
That's the only sticking point there. (Pardon the pun!) ![]() ![]() Mines an Alive tune, but I guess the issue is an enthusiastic technician would likely do a blanket update map over the lot. The two I'd imagine are separate but could easily happen. I'll chat with Alive and see what they say, but if purely a pilot learn is complete then I can't see any issue either. Tangentially on-topic but is it just me as I replaced mine and I'm subscribed to these threads or is the VCV is getting a lot of discussion recently? Not just today, but over the last few months?
Perhaps a lot more vehicles are approaching a statistical wall where the VCV up and poops itself? And that combined with a lot of folk both now out of warranty and having bought diagnostic tools that can do the procedures? (along with remaps) I wonder how many VCVs have been replaced when not needed? There are always humble exceptions, but in general people are more inclined to report back success rather than 'failure' when playing home garage .. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

You are right, it has been duscussed a lot lately.
I'm on 56k miles. BW has mentioned he's on his 3rd in 200k. It would be interesting to cross reference mileage / age and see what happens with multiple people. I don't do large milage so issues on mind tend to be age related more than miles. It might also be the spate of cold weather here in recent months as we had a relatively mild winter last year.
