Whilst tinkering today and standing to the rear of my '12 90 Puma, I pushed the remote to lock and instead of the regular 'shunk' noise, I got a strange 'sh-sh-sh-shunk' noise emanating from the rear door. The front did their normal thing but the rear sounded like it was stuttering.
I checked and it was locked and then repeated the action and over 3 attempts, the stutter reduced to the regular 'shunk' just the once. I am guessing it is some resistance in the locking mechanism which is causing it to lock/unlock in swift succession. I have just nipped out to try it again and it is stuttering again. Anyone any ideas? Phil |

The grease in the locks gets really stiff in the cold weather, likely it could be the solenoid struggling to pull the lock shut against the resistance of the grease. A few clicks probably frees it up hence the improvement. I'd try to regrease with a more liquid based lubricant and see if this helps.
Mine recently went from having a rather pained lock sound to failing to lock the drivers door. I took the door card off and regreased and it's been grand since. Alternatively, if that's not the fix - any chance your rear door has dropped slightly on the hinges making the lock alignment off slightly? |

Sounds like a sensible plan. I was going to have the driver's card off this weekend to give the lock a bit of tlc as this is the door which plays-up when the temperatures plummet.
I don't reckon it will be alignment on the rear door as I removed the wheel two years ago and don't use the door all that often. I suspect it is either hard grease or no grease so give all the locks a service this weekend and see if things improve. Phil |

Not had a problem with the defender but did have similar problem with the Disco 1. It shuddered to lock then refused to open after taking off the door card I found that the linkages were covered in silt that had been sucked inside and coated all the grease and recoating everything was fine. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off. Richard |

Mine shudders too on a MY14.
Did mention it at the last service, but nothing happened. I knew of the grease problem but mine never seems to be a problem after a long run. Thought it might have been a voltage issue?? |

Clearly a common issue as mine does it too. MY13. Doesnt do it all the time but about 40%, not been able to tie it down to a common factor as does it all year and varying states of battery charge.

My April 2014 does this too. I did mention in when in for some other warranty work (replacement steering box that was leaking). The fix lasted about 2 weeks.
So for the last 14 months it does it, I laugh, and ignore it as one of those things... |
