England 2002 Defender 110 Td5 SW Coniston Green
A sad time for more than one family, there's only an unmanned crossing which is on a farm track on that stretch, all the road crossings are under bridges so either complacency or a tragic accident.

More information here, just remember that when you're out and about greenlaning that many byways and ORPA's cross rail tracks, use the phones provided and act to the instructions shown on the signs. Just stay safe Thumbs Up http://www.gloucestershirelive.co.uk/man-a...story.html

Sad

Horrible.

When I was a student, 25yrs back, I used to work at the pub at the top of the hill above that crossing. It's in a field and back then you had to telephone back to the signalling officer in Stroud to get permission to cross...usually only on foot or bike, but I suppose 4x4 too. More than a few times I knew locals with a few too many inside them crossing the line there.
I'm guessing he was the farmer. On a curve in the line so the engine driver wouldn't have much time to spot him.

Fortunately this is a farely rare occurrence in the UK. Many occupational crossings have been removed by Network Rail because of misuse and in the Southern region most with vehicular access are equipped with phones or have other controls to ensure safe working, but still misuse occurs. It is likely in this case that the crossing was misused and this terrible tragedy happened. I say likely but it may not be the case as I'm not familiar with this location but on the whole users can become quite complacent and ignore safe practices. As my day job involves the investigation of these types of incidents I must say that it could have been a whole lot worse and thankfully the loss of life was minimal. Whatever the cause my thoughts go to the families of those who have perished. Sad I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

I read about this, on one of the papers websites. Sad that the poor fella lost his life and I do feel for the engine driver too.

I remember one of the lads a good few years ago, decided to jump a crossing, just when the train signals had turned. He was caught on CCTV, He did end up in court and received a nasty fine and I think he lost his licence too. He got a right old slating on the forum when it came about. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back
