2.2 or old 2.5
Hi Folks.
Anyone got a 2.2 ddci, thats had a 2.5 Which would you rather have?

I prefer the TD5 but the tdci is better for use on the motorway, and the heater is much improved.
But you need one with aircon as there are no vent flaps below the windscreen.

Tricky one really, I've ridden in a friends 2.2 Puma 90 and it feels (and certainly sounds) a lot more refined than my rattly old Td5 90, having said that there's a 10 year age gap, not to mention about 100'000 mile difference.

My 90 with its' Alive stage 2 remap certainly goes well but I don't think the Puma is far behind.

The other thing though is the Puma interior which in my opinion is far superior to the Td5, even the updated (post 2002) ones like mine.

I also have a Freelander 2 which I believe is basically the same engine as the Puma 2.2, of course it's a far more modern car in terms of creature comforts and soundproofing, it's leaps and bounds ahead of the Td5 90 but I still love my old Defender and probably use it more than the FL2, except for a long drive where I'm not towing anything and feel the need for a bit of cosseting. Laughing

I've had 300TDI and now have 2.2 Puma. Puma is much better drive. Lots of torque and six gears. You can listen to the radio at 70mph.

Much quieter in the cabin and great heater.

Mine is a basic farmers spec without air con.

It really depends what you want to do with it. I have had both. If you are doing a lot of Motorway or A road miles I would consider the 2.2 or 2.4 Puma over the TD5. If you are just pootling around then the TD5 will be fine.

I have a td5 and the wife has a 2.2 puma and I prefer my td5. The 2.2 is quieter and more refined on motorway journeys and the heater does work a lot better but the td5 noise and opening vents and many other reasons makes it the td5 for me. Ray

I found that my 2.2 110 was terrible on fuel. I can get 32 mpg out of my td5 90, my dad gets 30 mpg out of his 300tdi 110 CSW and the best I got from my 2.2 was 24 mpg Shocked

It was lovely on the motorway though and as mentioned the heating was excellent Thumbs Up

I would personally go for a 2.4 over a 2.2 just because of the dpf and no other reason Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I don't like Ford diesels. I have had Ford vans with the tdci engine.

They give trouble, have poor economy and can become uneconomic to repair at mileages in excess of 100,000.

Unless I am mistaken, the Freelander is a Peugeot engine so not the same as the Ford unit in the Puma. Rolling Eyes

Update - seems I am possibly wrong and the Freelander does have the Ford unit - well, well Embarassed Phil

The Freelander engine is not the same as the Defender engine. As above it is a PSA DW12, not the Ford Puma.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Oh lord - lots of conflicting info including Wikipedia which can never be trusted 100% but the wider concensus appears to support it being a non ford unit and the same as used in certain Mitubishi, VW, Citroen and Pug models Phil

I think you'll find I'm agreeing with you (your original statement) Wink

The Freelander 2 diesel is the PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) DW12.

I can only assume the "FL2 engine = Def engine" assumption is made as the Puma 2.2 and the DW12 are the same capacity and the vehicles both wear LR badges Rolling Eyes Laughing  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Either model (TD5 or tdci) will be OK if you get a good one.
The TD5's are all over ten years old now, but there are plenty of good ones out there.
Both versions have their faults and all are well documented.
The tdci can be trouble, but so can the TD5 if you are unlucky.
Personally l prefer the TD5 but the tdci is still a Defender and driving it you couldn't be in anything else.
With both models you need to be either good at fixing minor faults as they crop up, or have a local specialist who will keep on top of it for you.
