It can be done, I take it you know a larger intercooler etc is required into that territory.
I'm on 150hp, my concern with going higher would be longevity I.e. Clutch, extra wear or drivetrain etc. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

Assuming that the feeling of improvement from increased hp/torque linearly correlates directly with hp/torque itself then there is 150^2 / (175*122) = 5.4% 'more' improvement felt with the jump from 122 to 150 than there is with the jump to 175 from 150.
I.e. close enough to unity, which is saying yes do it. However, this doesn't factor in costs, something that I'm pretty sure wont have such a simple relation with perceived fun times. Personally I opted for 'Stage I' only using this logic. I've also discovered that mapping back to 122 occasionally (via BAS interface) allows you to experience the jump back to 150 over and over again: Click image to enlarge Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

I went from standard straight to the BAS170AB with HI-Flow intercooler, it is just amazing! I can't comment of difference betweem 150 and 170 though. Speak to Pete Bell since he developed both remaps I'm sure he'll be able to tell you James

If you're going to 170 that's certainly the way to do it ! Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Agentmulder if you go BAS170 you can go standard to 170 time and time again !!!!
My justification that 170 was OK was the trust in BAS and I believe the same engine in the Transit is available at 170hp from standard. Depending on what you want to get out of your landy there are considerably cheaper ways of going about it!
The Britpart intercoolers are rebranded Sercks and they are around 15% smaller than the Allisport/BAS equivalent but a much lower price tag. As for mapping speak to Mike at Dynachip or TD5insde, £250 mapped at your house. It is a full bespoke road map, imo much better than a rolling road map as it is actually suited to your driving style while on the road, which is where it will be driven. Rolling road maps will produce great figures on the dyno but often lacking that same power on the road. While youre at it, fit some silicone turbo hoses (TF ones £75, perfectly good) and turn the boost up to about 18psi (14psi is standard). This is done by shortening the waste gate rod by around 6 full turns. Well worth doing imo and the exact set up I had running on my old 90, ran for 4 years and about 25k with zero issues and a healthy 28mpg average (thats with the weight of a cage, sliders, tubular bumper and all sorts). One thing people often seem to forget is first and foremost it is a Defender, an old vehicle by any standard and its never going to be a supercar, so spend your money accordingly. That said one my 110 I have gone for the Allisport IC & hoses, TD5inside hybrid turbo & map, little more expensive but considerable gains imo. You can happily push a TD5 to 200bhp with any major negative consequences, any higher and you'll probably need stronger head bolts. As for torque the R380 box is rated to 380nm but many TD5s have produced 450nm+ without killing the box but in the same stroke standard TD5s have killed the box at 300nm... So choice is yours on that front. Standard clutch should also be able to handle that power without slipping but will wear out quicker. |

I'm with Steve on this one. The drive chain isn't particularly robust to start with. Putting more power through it is a bit dodgy |

Imo its down to the luck of the draw and how well your drivetrain has been looked after. As above my old 90 was running at least 180bhp and 380nm torque, 3 years and around 25k later no drivetrain issues at all....

Mind you, it does depend on how you drive it.
If you don't thrash it and out the power down hard all the time it should be okay. That is easier said than done though when you get used to the power. On mine before remap I would need to put pedal to the floor, I rarely have to if ever now at 150hp so at even more than that'd I'd just drive nice and smooth. Of course thepower is there if you really do want or need it. TD5's have often been tuned to the highest HP most commonly. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

Having had some experience with this I maybe able to help...
Our 110 was initially remapped to 150bhp back in 2013 when it was about 6-8 weeks old.... Pete at BAS did a great job and customized a few settings whilst he was at it... We ran with this setup for around 6 months (I still have the map stored on the BAS tool) Around this time Gary at Alive released the Ultimate intercooler... Which is I believe the Entreq cooler... Its a really nice piece of kit.... Anyway... I spoke to Pete about fitting this cooler and he suggested trying the "new' 170 Tune... So Pete sent me the file to the BAS remap tool and I sent it along with modifying the airbox as instructed... It was a noticeable increase, But not as much as the 122-150 initial map. The power is higher in the rpm range, so a little more rev'ing is required to get to it.... Since then we have fitted a Bowler exhaust system and a BAS intake pipe... These additions have really allowed the 170 map to give it's best..... Hope this helps... Regards Tim It doesn't matter how bad it is, It can always get worse... 2013 Bowler 110 (Sold) 2016 Bowler 90 Rally Spec (Sold) |

Thing is though thats almost £2000 spent... Far too much on a Defender imo when you can get very similar results for far less.

Drivetrain wise -
i have a alive tuned defender, everything inc hybrid turbo, exhaust intercooler hoses etc... only drive train issues was splines on the half shafts, (don't think the uprated power had much to do with this, the car had covered 40k miles at the time) i upgraded them whilst at rakeway getting my big brake kit fitted.... probably ran 10k miles on the alive 'PP4' and before that another 10k on the PP3 package... standard clutch.. towed my 2.5 ton boat, 16ft Ifor plenty of times, and i do give it some poke on the mountain roads... |

I ran 190bhp on the TD5 110 I had, the tuning work was done at 25,000 miles and the gearbox lasted until 90,000 before it gave up the ghost and needed a refurb unit.
I'm running 170bhp on the puma 2.2 and must admit, makes it a bit nicer to drive but still not gonna leave anyone standing at the lights. |
