td5 - occasional 'groan' initially in reverse
Folks,

Did a quick search and couldn't find a similar 'noise' related question, so apols if answered before.

Had my td5 since mid Dec'10 and have noticed on occasion, that when reversing out of the garage in the mornings, there is a 'groan' from the gearbox as you just pass the bite point in reverse. Happens once or twice for the first few yards and then nothing and then all is spot on in all forward gears. If reverse gear is used again, then the noise is not there. It's just in those first few yards.

It doesn't happen all the time and when queried with the indy that I bought her from , they commented that given the spate of cold mornings, it could just be that the oil is flowing slightly slower around the gearbox initially. On some of the milder mornings, I don't get the noise so this seems to make sense. However, if I park her in the garage so that I drive out foward then I don't get the noise at all, irrespective of the outside temperature, so is it possible that reverse gear is affected more than the forward gears?

Probably being paranoid and it's just another one of 'those' noises that's part of Defender ownership but would appreciate any comments/observations.

I had a 2006 td5 which did this it was the release bearing nothing to worry about went on for 45000 miles till i sold it cheers chris

Mine does it occasionally when starting from a cold overnight stop.
Had a new gearbox a while back. Made no difference.

It's common to Disco 2 and Defender.

We normally fit genuine LR clutch kits, and they do this from new. It's embarrasing when we reverse the car out of the workshop to hand it back to the customer. Embarassed

Only happens in reverse of course, as that's the only time you'll ride the clutch.

Thanks for starting this thread. I have this exact same symptom when cold, with it going away after a while. Good to know it's a case of "a Landy thing".

We fit these as a matter of course when doing a clutch kit. Makes no difference.

Yes, it will groan in 1st gear too, but you don't normally tend to ride the clutch in 1st like you would in reverse. Rolling Eyes Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Spigot bush.
We soak the new ones in oil, leaving a batch of them in oil until they are used, the bronze soaks the oil in & then when fitted, they don't 'groan'

Have fitted many like this, & none have made a noise since
