Hi matt, I cant see 1 mm making a lot of difference. the push rod self adjusts as clutch wears, ,

But its the presser plate that holds the clutch friction plate in palace onto the fly wheel when in drive

Our is different setup from that, the release arm is free floating. and Hydrolic pushrod, 1 mm farther away would not be felt, tractors used to get flywheel skimmed,, .

Tdi Flywheels are thickness critical because they can suffer from cracking. They also are a big part in managing the engine RPM. If the flywheel is reduced in thickness too much the weight is lowered to the point the engine can over speed which causes damage to the internals. Or so I'm told.
I managed to find a reasonable replacement at LR Direct as at the time mine went all I could find were in the £300-400 price mark ![]() Here is what mine looked like ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge The dishing and heating on it is still unexplained but the theory was in its past it had been machined badly and then allowed to sit for a long time which caused pockets of rust to form and then eventually the whole face was so distorted the clutch gave out as it was not really contacting very well. So I went to my local spares shop and measured a couple. Which were all undersize
![]() They were all non genuine. But I would have thought that if the dimension was so important then it would be something that even the after market manufacturers could get right. |

You would hope so
![]() Advice I was given was by a senior LR tech at a dealership who had been there since they were selling N/A Diesels so I have no reason to doubt him. That said, if all the aftermarket ones are out of spec then may not be so critical? An update on the flywheel situation.
I have now measured a total of 4 flywheels. 2 used. 1 skimmed and 1 new oem. All of which measured undersize of the minimum of 36.96, between 35.70 and 36.00 ish mm. So I have stuck with the one I had skimmed and decided that the WSM must be printed incorrectly ![]() |
