I'm sure it will do the job. But I reckon after a season of an axe, you'll be spending money on a splitter. I know I did 110 D250 SE HT

I have one of these for a few years now and I would recommend it. Not that cheap but great quality.

Fiskars X17 or X21 for the most of it with a 6lb maul handy for the heavier stuff. I do about 10T a year.

 Like that. I am going back for more today and will tell the guy who is giving me the free wood (I am giving him an antique pot hanger for his inglenook fire place as a surprise  ). You know your wood, he said the chestnut would take at least 18 months to season... |

A mazda6 estate makes a good log splitter... although it is not really re-usable (and I wouldn't recommend it).
This is mine after a tree fell just in front of me on a dual carriageway and I hit it at 70mph... split the 60ft tree clean in two!! Bloody strong too... I walked away without so much as a scratch!! Click image to enlarge

Do you have a splitting pawl? I've been feeding two stoves for over 20 years and, without doubt, it's the tool I've used most of all.

Yes identical to that
and a Shtil chainsaw and an electric Makita chainsaw which is surprisingly good.
Took ages to collect the wood from my neighbour having be shown around his 14th house and then he said he had an E TYPE  not only that but it,s a one and a half, he has had from fours years old and it,s done 68k It,s mint/concourse but never gets taken to shows, says he is not into cars. The guy is a working class bloke now retired, was a salesman for insurance/pensions but made his money from buying and selling his houses  |

A splitting maul is by far the quickest, and the ladies seem to like it if you're drinking a can of Diet Coke at the same time...
For knotty/gnarly logs I use a log grenade which is great (http://www.screwfix.com/p/roughneck-wood-g...7QodRQQGag) Both these methods much quicker than a log splitting machine IMHO |

maul is quickest i aggree there, but hydraulic splitter is def quicker on knotted bits for me, lots of oak here! Cheers
