It could be the starter solenoid on the way out. Can cause strange electrical issues and poor starting the running rough could be because the battery voltage has plummeted trying to turn the starter through a poor contact.
A guess but a pretty cheap fix if you can rebuild the solenoid yourself? Other than that I can only think of injector seals but that shouldn't cause any electrical abnormalities 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

if you search on here and probably Google you will find I had the same problem (very similar)
it was caused by the starter motor internals breaking down and causing spiking and arcing which was being picked up by the crank position sensor and the struggled to start. It would always bump start dead easy though or once it had cooled down. I also had a problem with the contacts on the main relay which made the water guage go into the red and shut the motor down. Maybe you have a mixture of both? 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

Update.
Last weekend set off to drive up to Norfolk. About 30 minutes into journey hear loud tap, tap, tap from engine and loss of power. Up until then engine temp was normal. Lots of smoke/steam from rear. pulled over and opened bonnet. Diesel or oil everywhere. RAC recovery job to garage (Foleys). Diagnosed as a broken piston probably caused by injector seals leaking dumping fuel into the sump. Replacement 2nd hand engine now being fitted. It's my first Defender and as much as I love it it's proving expensive so far. |
