Steering box bracket to chassis bolt - spanner sizes?
Hi all,

I've just bought a Safari Equipment steering guard with 2" receiver and I'm trying to fit it to my Puma defender.

I can't for the life of me work out what spanner size I need to remove the nut/bolt that fastens the steering box bracket to the chassis. I've read somewhere that it's 3/4 AF but I tried with a 19mm this morning which was too big so this can't be right.

Does anyone have any ideas short of measuring the damn thing with calipers?

Cheers,
roliver

19mm is a close match to 3/4 but still slightly bigger. I would advise a decent socket set for these jobs as they grip the bolt head better and reduce the risk of rounding it. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Hi Mash,

Thanks for the advice. I did have a socket that fitted very well. Unfortunately, the nut is screwed so far onto the bolt that the it's impossible to clip tools to the socket. I may try to get an extended socket for this purpose.

Also, I thought that 3/4 AF was slightly bigger than 19mm? http://www.csgnetwork.com/wrenchsizetable.html I must admit though, I'm absolutely terrible with imperial sizes.

Cheers,

Yep your right Roliver, been a busy day in the office. Most bolts on defenders should now be metric. Easiest way to measure it would be using an AJ and a rule. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

If it's the upside-down fork shaped bracket which the Panhard rod attaches too as well, then the two bolts are M12 (two different lengths).

They are flanged head though, so the expected spanner size is reduced from the expected 19mm. They are probably 17mm

Pre-Puma these were 1/2" UNF bolts with 3/4" spanner.

The nut onto the arm which braces the steering box is 1/2" UNF.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Although most are, even the last off the line still has a healthy mix of history. Strip the front axle (for example) and you'll fine British Standard, Unified, and ISO Metric threads right to the end. Rolling with laughter

So bizarrely, after going out and using every similarly sized socket in the set, it seems the bolt head is 15mm (5/16W) was too big) and the nut is an exact fit for 3/8W (could this be 18mm given it's a Puma?).

Landrover often uses non-preferred sizes!

Just did this job on mine and used 15mm and 18mm ratchet spanners and sockets.

That's on a 2016 model

Hi R1200GS,

Thanks for confirming my suspicions! I've bought a metric socket set this morning + 15mm/18mm spanners so I'll let you know how it goes and whether or not 2009 Puma is 15mm/18mm too.

Cheers,
roliver

Just for the record, 15mm and 18mm did it in the end.
