Thank goodness for LEDs!!
Today I had to replace the O/S headlight bulb in my sisters 2008 corsa. It made me realise that I have not had to change a bulb on my defender since 2011 when I changed to all led - what a blessing!

So to change the dipped headlight bulb I had to remove the airbox and pipes including the MAF sensor and wiring etc...

I thought that in continental Europe you had to have spare bulbs AND be able to change it at the roadside?

Well I'm pretty sure the Vauxhall tool kit doesn't include a t25 torx screwdriver, flat head screwdriver/lever for manipulating the pipework and 7mm socket and ratchet for removing the jubilee clips.

And to be honest I don't think if you had the tools you would want to do it on the roadside with a hot engine Confused

At least with a defender you could change the bulbs with a cross head screwdriver. I know my sister could have done that as she is quite handy with basic car maintenance but there is no way she could have done the corsa headlight bulb herself.

The N/S is no better. To get to that you would have to remove the fuse box or failing that the bumper and whole headlight unit!

Anyway rant over it just annoys me that car designers can package engine bays like that with no thought to maintenance Evil or Very Mad 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I think you misunderstand the idea - when the bulb fails, you're supposed to go to the dealer and trade the car in for a new one!

I am sure that I have heard of some modern hatchback (possibly French or Jap) where the whole front end has to come off to change a headlamp bulb, several hours work, and I believe ther reason why Halfords has the small print on their "we'll fit it" deal.

Ha, in theory, yes... In practise: to change the lefthand headligth bulb in my son's Fiat Stilo you have to remove the inner wing (wheel spat). Not a roadside job... Cheers, Vincent

Funny you should say that - my father and I were going to change the flywheel on it as it had started rattling. We started to strip it and quickly realised that it was a major job. Put it back together and took it to the garage Laughing

It is ridiculous really. To have to remove anything but a plastic cover IMHO is poor design.

It would be funny however to be pulled by the French police about a blown bulb and then start stripping the front bumper at the roadside Rolling with laughter

I had forgotten that! In all seriousness though I wonder how much the dealer would charge to change one?! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Your tyres are getting close to the legal limit? Time to go to the car park in the sky?
