Brexitish
Not every bodies favourite topic for a Sunday morning BUT today is the left-wing primaries vote in France. Have no idea who will win or care as the likely hood of the left leaning parties retaining power is about the same as Farage becoming the next EU Commission president. I'm pretty sure in fact that a euro-sceptic government is incoming which may have serious consequences for the stability of the EU.

I voted remain, but these days if I was asked to vote again I'd vote leave. Sharing my time between France and UK, and having dual citizenship I think I voted in a way I though I should, but now think the UK (and if they play it right the EU) will be better off out of the principal political union.

Since 2nd referendum idea keeps coming up, and the remain camp seem to have convinced themselves that a 2nd vote would mean a remain vote, I'm curious if that's true as the only people I have met who would change their vote (not many) are the same as me...were remain, now leave.

Are there any leavers who would now vote remain?

Oh, bit of LR in the topic - the likely next President (Anglophile, Fillon) is the owner of a Td5.

Just wish they would get on with it so we as a nation
can take what's ever coming our way and take it on the chin.

Ah, but was waiting to see if there would be an anti-EU, pro-UK President of USA part of the plan when delaying triggering A50?
If so...that was a master stroke.

Might I ask how you got "dual citizenship"? My three kids have, but that came about by one being born in Luxembourg and two in Damascus, the British Embassy in both countries said: “Right, you’re British so they are too”. The German Embassies said to the missus: “You’re their Mum (and being blonde with blue eyes helps), so they’re German”.

This is a Defender Forum not a political one, I’ll say nothing other than that I worked for 13 years in the European Parliament and 12 for the Commission. And I’m leaving the UK sinking ship, already underway is nominating my gaff in France as my résidence principale. Less concerned about eventual citizenship with their equivalent of the Citizenship Quiz than avoiding double taxation with my UK and European pensions being lumped together and HMRC having a field day. Do you drive on a UK or French Driving Licence? I’m 70 next year and have to muck about with renewal on medical justification. I know that I’ll lose all my HGV entitlements without expensive private medical exams - and quite rightly too, although I won’t bother - but will my motor-bike entitlement continue with “self-assessment”?

Is the French one, once issued, “for life”?

Driving licence wise everything changed in France in 2013.
Before that any licence issued before, I think 1997 (don't quote me) was indeed a valid for life licence. Then there was a need to renew every X years and then in 2013 all licences issued before September were given an expiry date of 2033. Any licence granted after September are now valid for 15yrs and then must be renewed.

I have no idea what happens once pension age, but my French father-in-law did have to do a test when he needed to renew his (he's 72). I think this was because a doctor requested it. 2 or 4 wheels I assume its the same regarding licences since 2013 under the EU regs, aside from the initial age that you can request a licence. I say that because Michel also has a Harley.

If you register your main residence here, you need to change your UK licence to a French issued one, even though they are EU. No more driving on UK plates either - that becomes illegal with quite serious penalties as it's impossible to be insured.

Citizenship wise, I was actually born in on Reunion and lived there for first 11yrs. Parents were Scot/Welsh and as far as I'm aware when they moved back to UK there were no issues. None they ever made me aware of anyway.
Already had a French passport (renew when needed, never an issue even though not resident) so didn't bother with the UK one until I wanted a visa for Australia. No issue - filled in the forms and got a passport.
Oddly, only the French passport reflects my dual citizenship.

Cheers for the prompt reply. Yeah, I want to do as much as possible pre-Brexit and while EU flexibility still applies. Driving Licence is probably next on the agenda.

I saw some recent polling results which suggests that approx. 5% of each side had changed their mind, which more or less balances out so if the referendum was held again the result would be very similar. (as with all polls take with a pinch of salt but it suggests there hasn't been a large swing one way or the other)

I voted remain and would again if given the chance because I truly believe it would be best for the UK and the rest of Europe. I've also gone for duel citizenship but Irish rather than French.

<facepalm>

The first bit I agree with. We have to get on with it now. The last sentence is because people believe this statement is true that we are here in the first place.
Only time will tell, because NO ONE, including the idiots that piled on the hype or the people running the damn country, know what's going to happen.
Only one thing is certain. It's not as bad a mess as America is in Whistle New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

^^^^ Same here, couldn't have said better. USA - UK heading in the right direction IMO.

Politics has no place on here IMO we're all pretty respectful to one another and controversial threads easily ruin an otherwise superb atmosphere. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Don't agree with that - a cordial environment should be the exact place where politics CAN be discussed with the various views being respected by all. If it's not up to that, then it's not up to much so to speak...

That said, wasn't an attempt at a thread about the politics just on if or not people would change their mind 6 months on stimulated by seeing the likely next French president driving a Defender around his property of TV this morning...

I got the distinct impression that there will be no "WW2 movie punishment style beatings" for the UK from France on his watch and instead a lot of understanding and goodwill towards the Brits. Possibly the effect of him owning a Defender? Very Happy

I like politics, even have a Degree in it.

But the Referendum result has split families, never mind a forum so better leave it be and help the country get on with it.

However it does leave a nagging question in my mind:

How come a British political Party that spent the entire 20th Century fighting for "Power to the People" then spends the entire Referendum campaign fighting to take power away from the people?

That surely is a U-turn of catastrophic proportions.
