In September 2020 London will have an Ultra Low Emissions Zone. This means vehicles that are not Euro 6 compatible (virtually every Defender) will be charged extra for entering the current Congestion Zone. More here:
https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone 2.2 TDCi's are Euro 5 standard meaning they have a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter). However, in order to meet the stricter Euro 6 standards they'd need a SCR unit (Selective Catalyst Reduction). This combines Adblue (mix of Urea & water in a separate tank) that feeds into the system to neuralise the NOx gases. I understand companies like Eminox make retrofit parts for buses and lorries. I was wondering if similar technology can be implemented on our beloved Defenders. I have contacted Eminox to ask... but wondering if anyone is aware of any other options currently on the market? Hopefully there will be a push to find cost effective solutions as a lot of diesel vehicles like ours will need it! 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack |

Whilst this won't/unlikely to affect me luckily, it is an interesting thought.
I just wonder however, assuming it will be done on number plate recognition/V5 information, if it would be capable of picking up a specially modified vehicle or if it would just assume a standard spec? James form Eminox just phoned me and explained that the retro-fit systems they've developed for buses and commercial vehicles cost £15000 a pop!
I asked if they had plans to develop smaller units for the mass market, but they are definitely not. They say the development costs will be too high and the unit cost would still be expensive. I suppose Landy owners are unique in that they keep their vehicles for much longer and don't adhere to the normal economics of redundancy and replacement... Still I do hope something will be produced. Otherwise an option would be to swap the block (hmm excuse for an LS3 methinks ) 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack Last edited by acuss01 on 11th Jan 2017 1:20pm. Not so bad for the Ace café. They are in the LEZ not this new ULEZ.
And on the TFL website there is an exemption for older vehicles. Historic vehicles All vehicles that have a 'historic' vehicle tax class will be exempt from the ULEZ. This tax class excludes any vehicle used commercially. Vehicles built before 1 January 1973 will also be exempt from ULEZ. These vehicles were built before emissions standards came into force and are exempted because of their unsuitability for engine conversion or replacement. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

Stolen from DVLA. It is once again a rolling date if they choose to continue that.
How we identify a vehicle as ‘historic’ You may be able to tax your vehicle in the ‘historic vehicle’ tax class if it was built before 1 January 1976 and is one of the qualifying vehicles listed below. Qualifying vehicles Private or light goods vehicles – this includes buses used for voluntary, community or other non-profit-making purposes. Motorcycles and tricycles. Private heavy goods vehicle (HGV) – this does not include vehicles designed for, or adapted for, transporting goods on a public road for business purposes, including HGVs used for driver training or testing purposes. Special vehicles – this includes mobile cranes and pumps, road rollers, works trucks and digging machines (except showmen’s goods and haulage vehicles). Haulage vehicles – not used for haulage purposes. Special concessionary – including agricultural machines, mowing machines, snowploughs, gritting vehicles, electric vehicles and steam vehicles. Note: you will not have to pay vehicle tax if you have a historic vehicle, but you must still tax and insure it every year. By law all drivers must be covered by motor insurance when they use a motor vehicle on the road or in any other public place. 1995 Defender 110 CSW 1971 SIIA Lightweight |

What kind of arrangement justifies a £15k price tag for peeing in the tank? Never forget: cars have owner, Landrover have field service personnel. |

I agree - and what justifies penalising a 2 year old Defender from driving it in one's home city. I couldn't have bought any cleaner from LR! 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack
