The new Defender (when it comes out in 2020!) has some serious competition. It will be a global vehicle, so may well come to the UK. Ooh err! Just hope it doesn't look like this.

No, it's not just you. It's like Netflix, they confuse thrillers and horror films.
I hope the Defender is stylish, but it should also be rugged. If it could be hosed out, I think that would be good. I actually like the DC100, and thought JLR missed a trick. That could have appealed to the style concious, and a rugged version could appeal to die-hard Defender fans. |

Oh, dear, that's hideous.
On Saturday at around 5pm I was heading towards Exeter on the A38 near Ivybridge and passed two new American Ford double-cabs in convoy. The rear was an F-150 Raptor, which looked very nice, but the front one was an F-650 double-cab, which was simply stunning - it's HUGE! Apart from a few practical difficulties (size, gross weight, fuel consumption, not being available this side of the pond) I give one of those seious consideration! |

A little design history lesson, if you dont mind. Do bear with me...
The vehicle shown is a Ford of America design concept that was created in 2004 under J Mays, at a time when Land Rover was a member of their Premier Brand Group. Mr Mays had a thing about identifying the icons and re-creating them. Amoungst them, a somewhat boxy looking modern AC Cobra roadster, and an excellent take on the 1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe, called the GR1. The two most successful ones, which made it to production, are the Ford GT, which is an upscaled 1966 GT40, and the modern Ford Mustang, which kick-started another muscle car war in Detroit. Unhappy with what Land Rover and Jaguar were doing themselves, he asked his American design teams to do proposals for the XK8, Range Rover .....and also the Defender. There are very obvious Defender cues in the design, although some details can also be attributed to the original Ford Bronco. They were also obviously influenced by the, then quite successful Hummer H2, which had been shown for the first time in 2002. J Mays has since retired, and a different wind blows through Detroit. I doubt very much that any of this design will re-appear in a new Bronco. I personally quite liked it. Straight lines and billet like features. As with the Hummer, the problem starts when they turn it into a production vehicle, and all those solid macho looking features turn out to be made of cheap plastic. It just isnt authentic any more. I realise its a concept, but with all the Safety requirements for passenger cars its not likely well see something so slab fronted as the defender or that ford is it. Wouldn't think it would score well on the pedestrian impact test.
Personally I preferred the DC100 concept than that Ford, way too much 'shaking that ass' bulginess going on at the rear too short in the window/roofline and the fronts not great, hmm Quite like it in the top down shot tho, maybe ill just have to only look at them from upstairs. 3 Landrovers |

That 2004 concept is only one of many that will appear between now and 2020. No need to get upset coz they are just sketches and models by people with too much time on their hands. Here's another one.

Saw this the other day, whilst picking up trucks off the wharf.....looked ok and sounded amazing.....well I just had to start it up so I could move it to get to my vehicles, pity it was in transport mode

There's got to be a market for a small 4x4. Suzuki have done well out of it. My wife had a Rav4...and I ended up driving it more than she ever did! It was a cracking little car. My wife also had a Shogun Pinin, which was incredibly reliable, and I had a Shogun V6 - fantastic. But Mitsubishi have lost the plot now. I didn't realise until the other day that the Suzuki Grand Vitara, which is amazingly small, has a 2.4 litre petrol engine!
