Oil Catch Cans
Has anyone fitted an oil catch can between the breather assembly (thinking of a 200tdi) and air intake pipe? For anyone wondering what one is here's a couple of pics.

I'm guessing the cyclonic breather on the tdi engines is meant to filter out any oil vapour but still curious if anyone has one of these catch cans.

Try putting the word "provent" into the forum search tool. You'll find that many of us have catch cans.

Im just fitting this one from 42 draft designs on my 2.4 Puma, its important to find one with the correct size inlet and outlet pipe diameter so it doesn't become restrictive.

I thought I'd try a catch can on my Defender 200tdi because I used to get a little oil in the air filter can.
My experiences led me to remove it again shortly afterwards.
Fitting the can seemed to result in increased crankcase pressure leading to loss of oil through the front crank seal, the dip stick tube and via the cyclonic seperator o ring seal.
I surmise that the connection from the cyclonic seperator to the inlet tract provides positive ventilation to the crankcase, the negative pressure induced by the inrushing air drawing positive pressure from the crankcase.
I was a bit miffed as the timing case had to come off to change the front crank seal.
Needless to say, I removed the catch can and reverted to the original system and all has been well since, I'll live with a little air filter contamination.
Just my experience.

wonder how the oil makes it back to the filter? as it enters close to the turbo, you would think the negative pressure airflow would prevent this! My 109 thread

On my 300tdi I have a catch can that vents to the atmosphere. I have fitted the allisport cyclonic breather and then run a pipe from that to an ally catch can with a filter on the exit of the catch can. I packed both the breather and catch can with stainless steel scouring pads to aid with catching the oil.

This seems to work very well and stops any oil getting into the intercooler. It doesn't seem to collect much oil in the catch can, but glad its not getting into the intake.

I had a custom silicone intake tube made up to fit between the airbox and the turbo without the intake for the breather pipe.

g-mack, I think it's just condensed oil that drips from the pipe when the engine isn't running and then pools, running into the air filter box which is at an angle.
