Refinishing Chequerplate - Backing/gasket
Generally speaking, is chequerplate backing/gasket material stuck fast to the chequerplate?

My 110 came with silver chequerplate which I intend to remove and refinish black. The type of finish (anodise, powder coat, paint) depends on whether the backing/gasket comes off. If it doesn't then it depends on what the backing/gasket material is made of.

I would like to remove the chequerplate completely but the associated panel damage will be too costly to repair so refinishing black is the best compromise as it will be less prominent against the Stornoway Grey paint.

Perhaps I’d be better off buying new black chequerplate? My concern there is that the fixing holes won’t line up, resulting in more hole drilling and more opportunity for rust.

Are replacement backing/gaskets available?

I realise the answer it to take it off and have a look which I will do at some point but until then, any experience gratefully received…

The backing gasket is neoprene, probably 2-3mm thick. It's loose fitted so shouldn't be stuck to the back, although never say never. Even if it is though, it's not an insurmountable problem.

To be honest, your last line really sums it up - take one off and have a look. It's only half a dozen or so bolts or screws.

Buying new chequer plate just to change the colour does sound like overkill. Darren

OE plate has the neoprene foam gasket glued to it and free on the panel side. I had same issue, silver plate but wanted black to be less obvious. Unscrewed, refinished and screwed back on, all the time while the gasket stayed complete and attached to the plate.

Thanks both.

Does anybody know whether the acids or heat used in anodising or powder coating will destroy the neoprene?

For the smaller rear quarter and bumper top parts I used my own DIY powder coating kit I have. I didn't even attempt baking the gaskets, no chance they'd survive that I just scrapped them off and cut some new from same thickness self adhesive neoprene foam from a B&Q type shop over here in France.

For the long sills and wing tops I blasted to get clean (overkill really any degreasing cleaner will do but I had my blaster out for something else) etch-primed then spray coated with black engine block coat enamel paint from a rattle can I bought at a metal finishers down the road. Takes longer to do and dry that way but very hard and durable, at least as good as powder coat. Looks OE. No scratches or marks after 2000 miles motorway, road and off road over Christmas.

Best thing for CP is to dig a hole in acidic soil, place said CP in hole and cover up with acidic soil.
Leave there until forgotten about! 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Yeah I thought that but some panels attract a magnet where others don't? (off topic sorry)
