Hi there,
The background is my son bought me some security hinges for Xmas, I fitted the left one and closed the bonnet to check alignment and now cant open the damned thing!! Didn't realise the fitment would be that secure.... 
I've tried to coax it to open without success and was wondering (before I do some damage) if anyone could suggest how I can release the bonnet Happy new year folks. |

Thanks gents - replies appreciated - if the shake and yank method doesn't work will take the front apart to access the cable mechanism

as above. Have someone pull the opener and try pushing the bonnet down before lifting it.
When mine came off one hinge I had to use a screw driver to prise the pin at the front over to one side. It did work eventually 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car) 2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r |

My assistant did not arrive so a block of wood to hold the handle in the open position and a quick pull upwards released the catch.
Re-seated the new hinges but still same problem with the release. Cleaned out all the gunge from the lock/pin locating catch - I suspect it needs some fine tuning to get the positioning right since the hinges were installed - at least I can now get in without assistance (just carry my bit of wood in the back) Cheers folks for your advice which is always appreciated. 2006 TD5 2002 Honda Transalp 650 1995 Yamaha Vmax 1200 2014 Nissan Juke (wifes) |

My bonnet has never opened without the block of wood method and I have standard hinges !!
No amount of fiddling has sorted it out so I just live with it - and a block of wood in the back

Mine fully pops up off the catch maybe one time out of every ten I open it. Luckily the cable is semi-seized so it holds itself part opened nicely and then I can just stick my fingers through the grill and manually push the lever that last little bit and up it comes.
If I greased the cable/latch and adjusted it properly it would open easily but you know how it is... |

My smile of the day! So I'm NOT the only person in the world with such a lackadaisical approach to vehicle maintenance. And this thread reinforces my philosophies of leave well enough alone; if it ain't broke don't fix it (spelt of course with a 'u'); don't do today what you can put off 'til tomorrow (you might die in the meantime and it'll have been a waste). It's no time so much that, more that the various things requiring attention are ranked in order of importance. And something that, while a very slight fiddle, is still perfectly functional and safe doesn't tend to find its way up the list very easily. For the same reason the passenger door is still waiting to be rebuilt, it still opens and closes and keeps the weather out, plus I rarely use it, so it's ranking is not great.
However the wipers recently got a full rebuild as they were getting sloppy and noisy, and so given the mileage I do around the west coast of Scotland and the potential impact of wiper failure this was a pretty high scorer! |

If you're having trouble not releasing the bonnet when pulling the lever, The problem with my td5 was, part of the release mechanism behind the grill is riveted on..... except when it isn't, which it wasn't in my case allowing the plate to move
Eventually found it after the usual cursing swearing greasing and adjusting of cables had all failed. Shortly after that the plastic bonnet release lever snapped, so its been a pair of pliers ever since 3 Landrovers |
