I still have the original standard Varta battery in my now 8.5 years young SVX. Never had any problems with it.
Two nights ago I fully topped it up overnight with my Ctek charger. This morning without putting the contact on, I did measure the battery voltage at the permanent live aux power socket in the rear of the truck and got a reading of 12.2V. It is lightly freezing here now. Question, with the current cold temps, is 12.2V a normal voltage for a battery at rest which has been fully topped up just two nights ago and since then has not really been solicited much? This really is a debatable subject....Fact...each cell of which there are 6 should give you a terminal voltage of 2.2 volts fully charged. Naturally age and environmental conditions will affect this. Eric I do not think a battery of your age you have much to worry about.
Nevertheless it is only a snapshot of that moment. You do not know the internal condition of your electrolytic plates or any silt build up within your battery. It could potentially fail at any time. At work we change batteries out every 5 years regardless of condition, they also get capacity checked once a year. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Thanks Mal for your educated explanation. I believe the Ctek is not even charging a battery at the same ~14.4V the alternator is doing. If I remember well, when my Ctek 5.0 is charging the battery at its max output capacity, I get a reading of about 13.5V. So I guess that I will live still a bit longer with my original battery, matter of fact, even in mid summer, I never ever got readings of the battery at rest of more than 12.5V. Was just wondering if the 12.2V is a bit at the low side after recently having topped it up.
How's the Harley doing? That is what you have, correct? Stored away for winter, or are you still braving the cold now and then with it? Eric You never actually own a Defender. Are you topping up with water or electrolytic acid? Water will also reduce the capability of your battery over time!
Braving the cold Eric, still running her in at the moment, don't take her out if the roads are wet or if the gritters have been out. Resisting the overwhelming desire to crack the throttle open to see what the Stage 1 1802cc V-Twin engine can do. Had to have a remap when the exhausts were swapped out. Not a BAS or Alive one I hasten to add! Still sits at 75mph at 2,500rpm in sixth gear. Another 70 miles and I can then go to 3,500rpm. I think I may have the same safety rated black Harley-Davidson Kevlar jeans as depicted in the picture above. They certainly look a better fit on her.

Interesting observation. After having the Ctek MXS 5.0 on the truck overnight again and this morning all yellow plus the green light on, the battery voltage showed as about 12.1V.
I noticed that the Ctek has a cold weather charging function, meaning that it will charge the battery at 14.7V instead of the standard setting when it will charge at 14.4V. As the temps here are just below freezing, I put the Ctek back on at the cold weather setting, and my battery monitor which I put in the rear socket showed indeed charging at 14.7V. It charged like that for another 2 hours before the green light would come on. Disconnected the Ctek, and the voltage monitor then showed 13.3V for about 15 minutes, then gradually dropped down to 12.9V where it is sitting now after about an hour. I hope that means that my battery still holds its charge pretty ok. Eric You never actually own a Defender.
