Turns over then RPM conks to 0 after about 2 seconds
Very very intermittent fault with my 2.4 - like twice a year, but it will repeat itself when apparent.

I can describe tonight's version with a lot more detail than the first time it happened (about a year ago) - anyways, so the engine is warm (normal mid-dial) and I'm attempting to leave the station after fueling up:

- Key to II until glow plug lamp goes out.
- Key all the way (III), starter starts and sounds as per normal
- Engine turns over, I release key to II
- Engine falters and stops - no drama, just a steady RPM drop to 0
- Battery, engine and oil can symbols are lit.

Key to O, repeat process, same again.

Check faults on BAS RR2 tool (like the BTII tool) - no faults

Same again, but this time I give the engine a little accelerator just after turnover - small falter but then it's fine, I return RPM to 800 and it holds idle - I then drive home...

Once home, check again, same issue, stops after 2seconds
Check again with accelerator, gets going.
Check again, starts fine and holds 800RPM with no accelerator required (as per normal)
Ditto
Ditto
Ditto...

The following facts are given with a healthy dose of 'FWIW':

- The ambient temps around here at the moment are what those from hot climates would call cold, and those from cold climates call hot - we call it 'quite nice'.
- Battery contacts at the battery are fine, as is the battery gnd to chassis.
- The battery and alternator were giving correct voltages yesterday.
- The starter sounded normal.
- Fault happened right after fueling, I don't think it's dodgy fuel.
- I've read this: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic7914-15.html - not sure if it's relevant.
- First time I experienced this I didn't have the BAS stage 1 remap, now I do.

Any ideas? A random fart to be expected at the tail end of an otherwise acceptable bell curve of driving experiences or a sign of trouble to come? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I had a similar issue where my 110 would start and immediately stop. I reseated all the fuses that looked like they had something to do with the alarm. No issues since. (I'm also running the BAS tune).

Cheers,

I have similar and once I top the coolant up it goes away for a few months.

I assume there is a sensor that the ECU looks to once the start up phase is complete and it switches to tick-over. I assume whatever it's looking for isn't correct so the engine shuts down. I'd like to get to the bottom of it but filling the coolant up delays that day a bit. My car runs normally in every other way.

Sounds like an immobiliser gltch. Lock the doors by remote, leave to re-learn, open and start? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Yes sounds like an immobiliser problem. Mine does it occasionally - usually when you leave it without locking it. I think it's called passive immobilisation which you can switch off with some of the diagnostic tools. I've left mine on though as it's no big deal to lock it and unlock it again

I have no central locking, I did remove the keys to unlock the tank cap though, my partner was in the car, so I didn't arm the alarm.

Still possible immobiliser?

I'll check the coolant and fuses and relay seating too...

But then if it's currently working, I'll never know Rolling Eyes Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

That's normal that is the immobiliser self arming.

I would bet if you had pressed unlock on the fob even though open already just once, let the hazards flash on dash a sec then start it'd never do it.

Howver, the dash LED will blink if its armed, did you notice at all.

A typical example for me is, stop to fill up with fuel.
I have a passenger with me, so I don't lock my 90.
Go in and pay for said fuel, when I've got back the immobiliser has armed its self even though I never locked or unlocked it.
I normally get in, you'd see the immobiliser LED blinking.
Press unlock on the fob once, once the hazards have stopped flashing in around 2 secs.
Start and off you go, no problems.

If you don't, it'll start then cut out in a few seconds. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

The same will apply if you have an immobiliser only or with central locking as well. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

i have had exactly the same as this on my 07 2.4. it has no remote with it, no central locking either. each time its happened its when its been left for 5mins or less after being stopped and keys removed from ignition.

Mine doesnt even have the 'new' 07 style key it has a key like a TD 90/110 with no fob. Cheers

Good to know, but thinking about it how did applying a bit of accel kick through the issue? Hardly a security feature if that's all it takes? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Oh and yes, I'll try to remember what the alarm light is doing if it happens again. This AM it started fine (woo hoo!) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Worn ignition switch? Whilst it's several generations older, I recently had the same on my 90 - turn key to starter position to turn it over but it would then die when released back to position II. Turned out to be worn contacts in the switch and a new one cured it. Darren
