Just buy a set of 4 black 16" HD Wolf wheels, then you can buy the standard Defender size 235-85/16 Nokian Hakkapeliitta LT2 winter tire. That size will be less expensive.
And you get the quadruple benefit of... A. having the very best winter tire for a Defender (if you don't believe me ask anybody in Scandinavia), B. seeing how nice black Wolfs are on your truck, C. your precious 18" alloys won't get damaged up your salty or gritty mountain this winter, D. if you would have an accident no insurance company can claim that you do not run an approved wheel/tire size and may not pay out. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw |

Well, we had the first dump of snow yesterday, 8-12" in six hours. Drove home in the BFGs and I have to say that whilst they're not road-biased Contis, on the snow, with the 4WD and driving along twisty roads in slowish traffic 30-50kmh, they felt great, perfectly planted. I had as much feel and feedback as any other 'genuine' winter tyre I have used. Very happy and glad that it was pointed out the BFG is a snowflake....bring on more!!

Hi all,
Great thread and some interesting points of view here. I’ve been thinking of getting a set of winter Noikians for my 18” Bowlers. Looking on the Nokian website I’ve spotted Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2’s which have a good write up as a winter tyre and they are available in 275/60R18 113 R and 275/65R18 116 R size. Using a size comparator I found on the web these two sizes compare to a standard Defender tyre as shown below. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge I’d be very grateful for any feedback from anyone who has considered, or is using this tyre, and, on whether a 275 x 18 tyre will work ok on a defender (especially from the width and bodywork clearance point of view taking into account the Bowler offset?) and also whether people would recommend going slightly smaller than original diameter or slightly bigger – as indeed these two choices offer ? I think I'd probably prefer the slightly larger rolling diameter just from an aesthetic point of view - and if the comparator is correct even at 60mph its only 1mph different in true speed. Any thoughts or feedback much appreciated. Here below is the tread pattern of the Hakkapeliitta R2’s |
