Engine gone
Hi guys, new to the forum, so Hi to all.
Big problem !
Our 2008 110 county with 90k miles has seized.
We are being told and quoted all sorts of crazy prices to replace the engine.
Soooooooo :-
Will the transit 115bhp or 140bhp fit as a replacement, if the flywheel is changed to solid, and the sump used off our engine ??
Has anyone actually DONE this ?
The reason is, that we are being told that you can"t get parts for the 2.4 tdci engine, and that it will be around £6k to replace the engine !
Extremely fed up, and cannot believe the things we are being told.
ANY advice and suggestions would be very welcome.
Cheers
Spike

Hi

Have you had the car since new? I am very surprised that an engine has gone after 90k miles, is there a possibility that it was clocked ?

Is it made of gold or something?

You have all the ancillaries and Defender specific parts already - you basically just need the block and head. I've swapped out much more complicated engines that this. Can't see how labour could get anywhere near to covering the rest.

Could it be the oil pump failure with the recall? If it was Landrover might contribute Ray

Hi guys, thanks for all replies.
Yup, hsd the vehicle from new.
Your not as suprised as we are !!!
We've been told that parts are unobtainium for the 2.4, which I find hard to believe.
The £6K quote is including fitting vat etc, so an engine at £4K + would make it about right.
What is more puzzling, is that we can get a short, guarenteed transit engine for £1100 !!
I have yet to have a phone around on Monday, but as I said, as far as I can find out at the moment, the difference between the trannie engine and the defender engine, seems to be the flywheel, the sump, and possibly immobiliser and/or ecu.
Seems crazy to me !!
Thanks again for the posts.
Merry bleedin' Xmas !!!! Laughing

I know the customer relations section has been quiet recently but you should try a post there & see what the official line is regarding their obligation to support a model for 10 years.

Which parts are they talking about? If parts were that hard then Ford would have trouble with an awful lot of transit drivers! They were in production to 2011 and Ford follows the 10yr code of conduct on parts.

I once looked into parts availability on the 2.4 years ago and don't know if anything has changed. However at the time I came to the conclusion it was a throw away engine. Things like oversize pistons were not available from Ford. I do recall though that land rover offered more engine parts but at a premium price.

Ford / landrover would argue that they are still supporting the vehicle as they will happily sell you a new engine.

Known oil pump / recall fault as suggested.

I can see me needing to re engine my defender at some point. I think the car will easily outlast the engine and with the Puma not being as rebuild friendly as engines from the past, something else might have to be dropped in.

However getting the instrument cluster to work with another ecu would again be a huge issue.

The Defender Puma is an odd vehicle it has many repairable elements like cars from the past, however the engine and ecu / electronics are as disposable as any.

A friend and I have been playing with a instrument cluster, trying to get it to work with different immobilisers/ecu and we've discovered it is possible with a third party fully programmable ECU. Actually the DPF sensor input gave more trouble than the immobiliser (simple to code in) as it turned out.
When it comes to a full engine change to a different unit entirely, which I think you are right will happen at some stage, then going that route with the ECU would be the best option if more expensive. Also gives some extra tuning options.

Hopefully though, it's a good 10 or 15yrs before I need worry that much about it!

I had a stroked 7.1 LS3 corvette engine in my BMW
Z3. I ran an emerald ECU on that car, very easy to tune .👍
