I had one for a while, I quite like them. Quieter than an LT230 and I never managed to break one, which is more than can be said for LT230s !
The lack of a choice of ratios was what made me swap an LT230 in in the end. It's worth noting that the front propshaft will need changing if you fit a BW box, the front output is about an inch or so shorter than an LT230 so you need a longer propshaft, one off a RR of the right age will fit (1990 ish) or just get one made up or modified. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

changed to a BorgWarner on my last 90 which was a tdi.
Just made it easier and quieter. Good mod in my book! |

Bone question but what is the difference in ratio between the BW transfer box & the standard one I have in my 300Tdi?

The BW is 1.2, LT230 can be 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6
A 300TDi 90 should be a 1.4 transfer box so the BW is higher geared in high range, same as a Discovery so depending on the tyre diameter you have and how you drive, it may be a bit too high geared. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

I have one in my TD5 90 complete with the auto box and it is a big improvement over the LT230 as long as the ratio works for you. The comment about the prop is correct.

Thanks - what are the real world differences between a 1.2 & 1.4 transfer boxes?? I mainly stay in high ratio & have 235/85/16 tyres.

It offers a significant increase in gearing, similar to an overdrive, but on all gears. If you tow, drive in hilly areas or generally change gears often, then it may not be for you, however if you use the car on long runs then the difference is welcomed.

I fitted a 1,2 to my Defender (td5, mild stage 1) and now I am thinking of going back to a 1.4 as it does spend a few weekends in forests and single venue tarmac sites towing rally cars back to service.
Sometimes its a struggle up and down the gears when towing the Harvey Frost crane. (110 with kit in the back, HF crane and 1.5t rally car on a rope) 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
