2003 Defender 90 2.5 TD CSW Zambezi Silver

Ecu brocken??

Hello everyone
Just got a defender about a month ago to replace my Jimny! it was a big step!

About two weeks ago , the car had difficulty to start. the temperature gage had a life of his own. going up down etc..
I change the loom above the injector as I had some oil at the ecu contactor. But since the temperature gage still have a life of his own, when I pull the hand brake the temperature gage goes up and down?? And I still have difficulty to start. Sometime I have to wait 5 minutes for the car to start.
One of the technique that I use is to come out of the car, lock the car with the remote , re open the car door and the car will start. It`s bizarre, I put it down the ecu. I have clean the connector several time and I cannot see any oil anymore. there is no oil in the ecu . I took it out a made it stand on his side to see if oil was going to come out. none did....
Any idea.
ecu number is NNN500020

Given what you say about the handbrake, I'd start with checking the earths - engine block and ECU. It sounds very much like something is earthing through the handbrake cable. Darren

Two other points regarding difficulty you start is that:

1. On a td5 the starter solenoid can fail which can cause strange electrical gremlins on startup.

2. Electrical connections aside failed injector seals can make it difficult to start also.

Although given your description I would also suggest a poor earth connection too.

Try the chassis to gearbox earth aswell as the body to chassis one

AS well as what has been said above it is always worthwhile to check your Ecu fault codes to see if anything is being flagged up as this will generally point you in the direction of what is wrong. That is of course providing its not an earthing issue or something as simple as that.

Pulling handbrake and change on temperature gauge? Check earthing, and do it soon. If it fails completely, the handbrake cable can be used as engine earth. And asi it is made from steel, it gets hot and can melt a burn, possible burn the car. Hello everyone.
So I have checked the earth on the gearbox and the ecu box and everything seems ok.
Now, when I want to start the car I have to pull on the handbrake! Other wise the car does not start. when I release the handbrake sometime while the engine is turning it s seems to misfire for a nano second and the engine management light come on... just for a few second and then disappear...
Even when the car is not on. if I pulled the handbrake up and down the temperature gauge still moving.
Could it be that the cable of the handbrake is at fault?
I think that I am out of my depth now... I really do not know what to do .

The handbrake cable is the only one direct connection between engine/gearbox and chasis/body. But it is not suitable for working like electrical groud connection. This is why there are special grounding strips.
To really check then the best way it to remove them a clean the mating faces. Just look on the is not enough.
Or you can measure the resistance, but standard digital multimeter is not enough - the correct resistance is too low. Better way is to measure voltage difference between minus pole of battery, engine and body, with running engine, and with simultaneous using the handbrake. There should be nearly 0V voltage difference, and no change connected to the hand brake action. And this difference can be measured with standard digital multimeter. Ok, I wanted to keep you up to date.
Yesterday, I went to see a friend of mine. He has a ramp and knows a bit about cars. I wanted to show him the fault. The car has been playing up every day for the last month. Yesterday, The car work perfectly well...for the first time since I had the car the temperature gauge was were it should be! I turn the car on and off 20 time and everytime the car started perfectly, I pulled that handbrake 100 time and it never move the temperature gauge! I could not show the fault to my friend. TIPYCAL! I could not believe it...it was like the car knew that I was going to see a man in the know! Bloody thing.

Anyway, with access to a ramp, I took off all the earth point , sanded them all and replace the washer. All the earth point have now been done.
Will see what happened next...I will keep you posted ...

I'd put money on it being the earth.
One of the attempted thefts of mine they cut the earth cables to deactivate the alarms, it was exactly as you describe.
Every time I touched the handbrake it died and the handbrake got red hot.

I now have loads of earth's all over it where they cannot be accessed. 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)
2009 - current .... 2005 zx10r
