Help - Messed up doing the CheckTemp & UltraGauge mod
Hi,

I am trying to do the CheckTemp & Ultraguage mod for my dash as per Marks blog here:

http://defender90xs.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03...stall.html

All was going really well, drilled the dash etc and done all of what I thought were the hard bits, however now I have powered up the CheckTemp the screen looks like this:

However I have found by accident, if put pressure in the middle and hold it on the edges, ie make it slightly concave the screen works, like this:

I have tried pressing, poking and looking for any dodgy or slightly loose connections and I can only find putting a concave pressure works. I have tried different extension ribbon cables and get exactly the same result, anyone got any ideas what I have done, or how I could fix it or determine where the problem is.

I have put it back in the original plastic housing and it still does the same, so I either have to accept I had a dodgy unit from the start (didn't power it up before surgery) or more likely I have done something.

Thanks

Alastair

Hello

Sounds like you had an iffy unit to start which is a pain as looks a great but complicated mod?

How much is the unit?

I guess the hard part is done, can the unit be put back to normal for a return or has it been modified too much.

Nice work what you have done.

Could be both, I cannot see how you can now prevent the problem.
It looks like an LCD display and they can be fairly fragile by nature, outside of its housing even more so. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

Hi,
Thanks for the comments, just spent another hour fiddling with it, firstly the unit is one of these, don't know if it is Italian?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Check-Temp-Time-...0647874159

So I cant send it back, its well beyond that, kicking myself for not testing it first, but that's my fault. I can very repeatedly just put a bit of concave pressure on it, and its fine, so I am considering making a bit of a bent metal frame that puts it under pressure till it works then glueing it in.

The display is definitely LCD, and I originally thought I had caught part of the bendy ribbon cable on the bottom, but after playing with it for ages I am pretty sure its not an electrical connection problem, but the LCD is the issue.

Cheers

Alastair

Obviously, when you have to disassemble to be careful that the correct pressure is maintained in the gummy display contacts.

Removing it from its black plastic casing is lacking the support structure of the display.

It is not made to be cannibalized, then you should pay a lot of attention as per Custom90 wrote.

It was enough just to bend the metal mask gently supporting the display and you'd solved the display problem.

So maybe before criticizing an Italian product, you should understand that if I remove and modify an electronic product, it can happen that something goes wrong.

I do not think that British companies can teach anything to Italian companies (angry)......

I remind my UK friends, that the Politecnica80 company is one of the best OE parts supplier for BMW, MB, Volskwagen, Porsche,, RR and at least JLR ....
