Recall
Just got a recall on my 2007 to fix leaking oil seal on transfer output shaft. Apparently can render the hand brake ineffective.

Wow, that is an old problem, mine was done in 2010 as a service item. I wonder what's happened to make it a recall.

The problem LR identified was supposedly specific to the TDCi, in which the engine and gearbox are tilted up at the front to allow the engine to clear the front axle. This raises the oil level at the rear of the transfer box with the result that the rear output shaft oil seal becomes more susceptible to failure.

That at any rate is the theory, but I have to admit that from an engineering perspective it always sounded a slightly flimsy theory (given that it is not unknown for people to drive up hills, park on hills, etc., in earlier models).

I wasn't notified.

I took the Defender in for a main dealer service (not long after the warranty had expired) and asked them to sort out the oil that was running out of the handbrake drum whilst they were doing the service. It was a pleasant and unexpected surprise afterwards to be told that there was no charge for the oil leak repair since it was a service action for a known problem. If I hadn't taken it for a dealer service, I'd never have known.

There was a couple of other known problems that they dealt with at the same time, one was the replacement sump pan (the early 2.4s had a sump which the axle could impact on full articulation, usually with catastrophic results since all the sump oil was ejected), but I can't remember at the moment what the other was.

These were all three examples of LR's rather hooky way of dealing with these matters, namely they'll do it free of charge but only if you ask them to. It's a crafty and arguably cynical way of minimising their liability, because they only repair (a precentage of) the vehicles which actually need repairing. If they recall them, they repair them all.

Service actions are not recalls.

Service actions are only done if the customer reports the fault, otherwise the fault doesnt exist "if it aint broke and all"

So a service action would still be up to LR to action FOC, assuming we identify the issue and point it out to the dealer directly saying it is an issue?
