A steering wheel puller is a super cheap tool but if you are too lazy to buy one, take a small metal bar and drill two small holes in it exactly inline with the holes on the wheel ( one on each side of the big nut). Lay the metal bar over the center bolt and screw two screws equally in each hole until you are pulling the wheel off the splines. Not sure if I wrote it correctly but works the same way as a crank puller on a bicycle.

Be aware that not all defender steering wheels have holes for a steering wheel puller.

As far as I know, the hideous thing with the growth that looks like it should have an airbag but doesn't, does have holes for a puller (type B on the mudstuff page)

The rather less hideous one without the fake airbag growth (type C) does not have holes for a puller.

If the latter, try the bash/wiggle method (leaving the nut on if you like your teeth), and before refitting it put a smear of copper grease on the splines. Don't overtighten the nut when refitting.

How do you get "that hideous thing that looks like an airbag" off of the steering wheel in order to be able to get to the nut?
