My 110 rebuild
After using a 90 for many years as an off roader and an overlander we finally decided to buy a 110 as a second vehicle, the 90 for off roading/ laning and the 110 for overlanding. At the end of 2015 i started searching for a Tdi hard top but, because they tend to be worked harder than SW's, even the best and most expensive ones needed work. With that in mind i decided to buy an unloved one and rebuild it. It wasn't too long before i came across a 1995 Tdi pick up, mechanically all seemed ok but the bodywork was rough. The wings were dented, the doors were rusty and the rear tub had corroded through in places but it was a good starting point and reasonably priced considering the way prices were going.

I'm doing similar, it takes a lot longer that you'd think (to do it properly anyway). Good luck and keep us posted Currently rebuilding my stretched 110 (now 122) to personal spec, probably going to be a double cab dropside, but not fully decided yet. So I've started at the front end first!

I started removing the big lumps that i was either going to sell or scrap, i wanted to get rid of all the stuff i didn't need asap so they weren't taking up valuable workshop space. I removed the Ifor Williams, truck cab, rear tub, doors and seats and, despite the 'used' condition of them, sold them all for a lot more than i thought i would. I suppose one mans junk is another mans treasure and at least all the parts get to live again.

I finished stripping what was left and cleared away all the scrap. The chassis was cut up and, together with anything else that wasn't needed, was weighed in for scrap, though the ridiculously low price i got for it barely covered the cost of the diesel to get there.

Now i could get on with putting it all back together. I stripped both axles and managed to save 2 x cases, 2 x diffs, 1 x swivel housing and 1 x hub, the rest was either damaged, rusty or worn. Both axles were rebuilt with new parts, a pair of spring seat brackets were welded on, to replace the rusty ones that i almost pulled off by hand, and they were given a lick of paint.

All the suspension arms were cleaned up and given a lick of paint.

There is a wide price difference for some replacement parts and i spent a long time deciding what parts to use. There are certain cheaper parts that have a bad reputation for quality but, after lots of research, i have used some of their parts and been generally happy with them. I've also used some more expensive parts and found some them to be below the standard i was expecting. I've found that price does not always dictate quality and other peoples experiences can give a better idea of what you're buying.

Some great work and what a lot of work!!

Whilst it's great to see 'old' Defenders being brought back to life, what motivates you to do such a big renovation rather than just buying a Land Rover in better condition? James

I wanted a TDI for its mechanical and electronic simplicity and because of their age I couldn't find one in good enough condition. Over the next few years we intend to do a lot of travelling in the vehicle and I wanted one that was going to last for as long as I needed it so the only way to get what I wanted was to build it myself.

Keep up the good work....having just completed a tdi re build....the pleasure you will get from driving it when completed, makes all the hard graft worth it.....Much more satisfying than buying a new one Thumbs Up

Nidge - i've been following the build of your 110 with great interest, it was actually a vehicle I had considered buying when I was looking for one myself.
