id guess a turbo is more fuel efficient gives it runs off exhaust gas rather than a supercharger which runs off the crank.

@mcma - are you / have you advised DVLA about the change of fuel type, capacity and transmission type? If so, was it straight forward. Same question to GREENI too.

Just wondering whether to advise DVLA on my V8 conversion. I can only imagine it gets more difficult the newer the vehicle.

Technically turbos are superchargers (turbo-superchargers). They're both devices for supercharging the air going into the engine, one happens to run off exhaust.

You can also get electric ones and probably many more. I don't know which is more efficient because even with a turbo you're sacrificing some power by providing resistance to exhaust gases. It's all down to how much benefit you get from it.

I remember seeing something about the McMerc SLR where the supercharger required something like 200hp when the original engine gave you about 250. It did provide another 400HP though... Ed

Simple letter to them with details from wildcat to verify the install including the engine number and gearbox code. Job done. Andy

thanks guys. GREENI did you back it up with any documentation / engineers report etc etc? Googling horror stories of IVAs and DVLA being arseholes etc. You had the V5 back? Also what year is yours?

It had already been converted from a 2.5 petrol to a 3500, so no worries.

Mines an '85.

Supercharger is mechanically driven, Turbocharger is exhaust driven.
It is true that Mercedes (AMG) use turbos, and boy, don't they do it well, anyone that's driven one will attest to that, and of course many many cars these days use turbos.
However, when ya're talking yankee LS engines, and ya want simplicity, then a supercharger is definitely the way to go. Our latest HSVs (factory modified Holden Commodores) are putting out around 600HP with an engine which is virtually the same as the engine in this Defender, but with a supercharger. Another variant is about to be released which will have around 700HP, all perfectly tractable,...drive around at 1500rpm if you like!

For an interesting comparison, the mightycarmods guys on youtube have just done a pair of mx5's, identical save for the fact one is turbo, one is super.

Turbochargers are more efficient, and with modern VNT systems, turbo lag is practically eliminated. It is also generally easier to get bigger power out of a turbo. Superchargers are cooler though, better exhaust note and nothing beats the whining noise!

For sure, all cars are different, some use turbos & some use superchargers when modifying to extract more power.
I was particularly referring to LS engines though, where it is very easy to simply bolt on the supercharger to the top of the engine, which is much simpler to do on an LS engine than fit a turbo which requires a lot of extra manifolding etc.
There are HEAPS of very powerful after market modified Commodores in Aussie, and for sure some of them would have a turbo fitted, maybe two!!....but the great majority would simply bolt on a blower.

There a company in America that converted a 2nd Generation Ford GT from supercharging (circa 650BHP) to twin turbo... Initial installation was around 1000BhP... They then 'updated' the system to around 1500Bhp and I believe their currently around the 2000Bhp.... Madness... But does make you wonder what a 2000Bhp Defender would be like... Apart from very Scary!!!
