We have the Hive wifi controller for hot water and gas central heating. We've had it now for two years and have not encountered a problem. The thermostat is located within 5 metres of our wifi hub in the same room. The wifi controller is connected by ethernet cable to the wifi hub. Controller for boiler is located in a boiler/laundry room outside. If we want to over ride or change settings then we do that from either an app on ipad or iphone or occasionally may do it straight from the thermostat. As said above we have not had any problems at all. Defender 90XS SW

We are running the Hive system after getting a large discount from British Gas who we have a maintenance contract with, the only problem we have had is that on occasions the three parts don't talk to each other due to the distance between them, the Wi-Fi unit is located upstairs and the boiler unit is located down stairs at the far end of the house, the thermostat is located in-between. A call to British Gas sorted it out, a small plug in extender unit arrived in the post next day . What did surprise me the other day was an automated e-mail from Hive giving the average over the month and daily heating temperature for the house. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to  us off.

We have Hive too, got it along with our new boiler just over a year ago. Not had any issues with it, easy to control and schedule from a phone or web.
If you live in an Apple ecosystem it might be worth looking at HomeKit enabled controllers for the flexibility of adding new devices and controlling everything from one place. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

We have Nest stats on the two heating circuits, allows us to keep the upstairs cooler than the living areas downstairs. We use the stats wirelessley rather than hard wired and have never had any issues with the wifi connection. The stat is neat and easy to use likewise app is simple to use and the analytics Nest send you about your energy usage are OK. Quite impressed so far and there are lots of IFTT recipes to integrate with other smart systems

I fitted a Nest Thermostat last weekend, it was easy enough to fit and the wireless connectivity between the heatlink and thermostat seems reliable so far.
My oil boiler is not entirely happy, as it has gone into overtemp lockout a few times, so I've just dropped the boiler temperature to see if that helps. |

Who and how many people, contractors and associated parties who manage these services have access to your location data ? Hive and the rest of the Internet of things, e.g. Internet kettles, fridges etc ... just something to think about

When I say location data I mean real time tracking ... some of these devices like to switch on when you are close to or approaching home

Thanks people for your input,
Decided on the hive in the end, installed it yesterday & impressed so far, I've turned the geolocation off, I'm sure it's great if you live alone but I don't think Mrs Piggle would be happy if the heating went off every time I drove out of town!  |

Just to add to this thread even though the OP has decided on which one to go for.
We recently completed a three year refurbishment of a listed property. When designing the heating system it was quickly apparent that a single thermostat just would not be efficient enough due to the size of the property so we went all out with individual room controls. Being the automation nerd I am, We linked the entire heating system to a home automation system which has given the fine control needed to get as much Efficiency as possible out of boilers, and recently added a wood burner with back boiler to add some extra heat and efficiency. What I am saying is that no matter how smart your thermostat, it relies on the data it is collecting and in a single thermostat installation this will only ever be one data point. Yes it will learn your habits, but it will still heat every room in your house at once. If it's efficiency you are after then an individual room system is maybe something you should look at. The home automation system can be as smart or as dumb as you like... Depends on how much you like programming! The Nests and the Hives have their place but I would question their marketing accuracy. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender. |

Thanks, it wasn't really efficiency I was after, just replacing an old wireless thermostat that was playing up, I have seen the systems you talk of but having 3 daughters & a wife that are constantly "Freezing!" in which ever room they are in there would be little point in making one part of the house cooler, (One tends to shut the East & West wings down during the winter months & just make use of the servants quarters ) |
