I am in the middle of a rebuild, I don't have a garage and have to do it on the driveway. The bare chassis is ready to receive parts and I'm eager to get it back together so that I can start to make space in the workshop (it's a shed) to reconfigure the bodywork and interior.
I am now stuck with the problem of space versus practicality. I have lots of new shiny parts, but I don't want them to go rusty whilst sat out in the elements. I appreciate the fact that it will get lots of exposure whilst in use, but I don't want my new brake discs, drums, callipers and bearings etc to develop surface rust whilst waiting for the rest of the project. I could just wait until spring to assemble the whole project in one go, but I have already used the available space in the house -even the boy's bedroom has suspension components in it! Or I could cover the parts in a light oil to repel moisture, but I don't want it to affect the surfaces if I decide to paint them.... Have you any drive or space?

Mine just get's two tarps over it for survival. no worse than it just sitting on the drive finished IMO. V8 90...WIP

I was thinking about a pop up shelter, it might be the way forward.
@paulv8, I agree it'll be the same as when it's done, but it only takes a week of standing for the brakes to starts oxidising which is what I want to avoid if possible. Currently rebuilding my stretched 110 (now 122) to personal spec, probably going to be a double cab dropside, but not fully decided yet. Just make sure you weigh it down with some heavy steelwork!! Its not nice running down the garden and into a pond(if you have one) starck bo..ock naked at 2 in the morning and -5'c, trying to catch a bl..dy big 'kite'... and before you ask, I speak from experience ![]() |

I always subscribe to the thought that a bit of surface rust actually protects the sub surface from further rusting if its not subject to running water, submersion or salt. V8 90...WIP

You'd be better off with ACF50 or a mix of engine oil and diesel. WD40 is far to good a degreaser. |

Beekeeper thats what I used during my rebuild....worked well and better in the wind than i expected ! Also used pallet wrap to completely wrap parts etc that I wanted to keep clean and dry. ![]() |

Actually just won 2 gallons of ACF50 on eBay for less than £80 so you're right. Magic stuff, closest thing to snake oil that's saved many of my bikes over the years. |
