Mine failed recently for same reason but is a 1999 model which was never fitted with a cat but they insisted it was. I took advice from Ian at Irb and he confirmed that they were not fitted until 2002. I also provided the garage with come generic info from the web and eventually they changed their mind Rolling Eyes

Thats for the DPF, though. What about where there is a false CAT box?

Ive got a straight through de-cat pipe and its just sailed through its MOT. This is the second time. I think the best thing is to get to know an independent garage and keep chatting to the guy when he is inspecting and showing an interest in what he does. Hopefully, he won't spot the decat, but you may be accused of coming on to him Rolling with laughter

Sorry, I've been busy so haven't had time to reply.

I haven't spoken to the garage again yet, but I will be asking the question of how he knows its been cored out.

It's been going to the same place for the last 5 years, no changes to the system. It came with a straight through system, no middle or back box but the cat section has always been present.

I'll have to see if i can ask one of the prevues owners, they where a member on here I think, see if they did it.

If I have to change it, I'll be asking for the old one to see if it has or hasn't. I am tempted to just finish the service off and take it else where for the MOT and see what they say. 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

OK, Just been online to check what it actually said!

Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition silencers removed (7.1.4)
Exhaust catalytic converter missing where one was fitted as standard (7.1.3)

Now, bearing in mind it has been like this for the last 5+ years! 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

Times are changing and the test is getting stricter... So many people have de-cat'd and dpf removed that the gov has done something about it...

When we removed the LPG from the 50th we MOT'd it She failed for no CAT so I simply sorted a new one and it runs so much better now

I've no real issue with the CAT, except as far as I know it has one fitted and it's all working. I've never fiddled with it, changed its etc.

As for the noise, there is no way in hell im putting a new system on!! 2006 Defender Double Cab- Zambezi Silver

The excessive noise element in Part 7 of the test is fairly losely worded;

A silencer in such condition, or of such a type,
that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly
unreasonably above the level expected from a
similar vehicle with a standard silencer in
average condition.

It is generally interpreted to rely on the testers judgement, perhaps yours had a hangover Whistle
