Does it 'clonk' a little as you move slowly back wards and forwards?

When mine went and the engine was under load (accelerating or going up a hill) it sounded like a tin can was lose under the car.

Cheap and easy fix for the garage though.

If you want to rule things out, you can remove the prop shaft, put the transfer box in to diff lock and drive around in 2WD for a bit. The axle differential will still be going round (driven by the wheels) but you won't have the prop shaft to make funny noises.

It sounds like a UJ to me. But as the previous poster says remove each propshaft in turn and test it again. 1995 300tdi Defender 90 P/UP

You don't need to remove the props to check UJs.

Simply chock the vehicle on flat ground, leave handbrake off and gears in neutral, then you can get underneath and check for play in the joints by grasping the prop in one hand and the drive flange on the diff or transfer case in the other and twist them opposing directions - you should then see if there is any relative movement in the joint itself.

If there is then it needs replacing.

Then you need to take the prop(s) off.
