11MY Puma Steering "Splines"
Hi All,

Doies anyone know how many splines the Puma has for its steering wheel.

I am looking at ordering a steering wheel and steering wheel boss online.

Thank you

They vary. Some have 36, some 48. Only way to be sure is to take the wheel off and count them.

Indeed, you need to count the splines manually. I had to go through this to get the right boss for mine. --

Do you really need a steering wheel puller, to get it off?

no, but dont take the nut off, just unwind it until its *nearly* off. if you take it off you are likely to pop the wheel off and smack yourself in the face as it needs a lot of leverage. take it from someone who knows Laughing

You need a 22 socket to take the nut off. And then you need to pull very hard to get the steering wheel off, most likely you will smack yourself in the face with it Rolling with laughter --

Tr this.

Make a fist and with your right hand bang the right hand side of the wheel then do the same with you left hand and on the left hand side of the wheel. repeat and get faster. It does work if you have not got a puller.

A steering wheel puller is a super cheap tool but if you are too lazy to buy one, take a small metal bar and drill two small holes in it exactly inline with the holes on the wheel ( one on each side of the big nut). Lay the metal bar over the center bolt and screw two screws equally in each hole until you are pulling the wheel off the splines. Not sure if I wrote it correctly but works the same way as a crank puller on a bicycle.

I recently removed the steering wheel from my MY11 XS as it wasn't quite straight when driving straight (was 1 spline out, which was annoying me), and what I found was a bit unexpected.

You cannot use conventional puller tools as suggested above as the two holes either side of the large centre nut are no longer centred about it at 9 and 3 oclock, if you see what I mean. They are now at roughly 7:30 and 4:30. Also, they don't seem to be threaded any more either and are now blind. I checked with an M8 bolt (the two holes are about 8mm dia) and it it just pushed in until it bottomed out in the hole.

Fortunately, I loosened the nut a few turns in preparation for giving it a proper battering, and is popped loose with nothing more than a few seconds of gentle rocking.
