New Nas Rear Step Advise on rusting!!
Been wanting one of these for ever!! So decided to bite the bullet and treat myself it's about time I've not spent a penny on my P&J for ages (I've spent a small fortune on my new boat over the summer though... Laughing )

I've heard that these Nas Rear Steps suffer from rusting under the rubber tread plate as it's a water trap!? Has anybody else experienced this? Is there any way of stopping it before I fit it there must be something I can coat it with over the powder Coating to stop the rusting??? 2010 Defender 90 HT

Could give it a coat of Buzzweld CIO before it's fitted to give it another layer of protection? James

I had one fitted to my last 90, when it went in for a MOT they found it had rusted so removed it and found that the rear cross member had a rusted area which corresponded to the outline of the step, the step had only been fitted for 18 months. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

This was mine a few weeks after my third dealer fit replacement step. Removed the step and
tipped out a litre of brown water. I have resolved the problem by drilling small drain holes at the lowest part of the tubes. Also, lift the rubber tread regularly and look out for rust on the welded top plate joints.

I should have perhaps elaborated on my advice... I've just bought a new refurbished front bumper which has been re-powder coated. I wanted to stop similar early corrosion so made an enquiry to Craig Jones (Buzzweld) who is regularly on FB and he recommended giving it a light sand to provide a key and then use the Buzzweld CIO which will provide much better resistance to corrosion. So, its really like adding was wax oil, like you said, but should be better and has a hard satin finish.

Having not done it yet, I can't comment how well it works, but it seems to be getting great reviews on FB. Thumbs Up James

Just a suggestion, I've no connection, just what I'm going to try. Just be aware postage is almost as much as the product (due to hazardous product apparently) so make sure you order enough. I now wish I'd order enough to do my bumperettes and cross member.

Just for reference if it bare metal or already corroded I think you need to put the Buzzweld RCP primer on first. Best to speak with them, they're really helpful. Thumbs Up James

If you want it not too rust, take it to a decent hot dipped galvaniser and get it dipped in molten zinc.

With holes drilled it will also coat the inside.

Then you can get it powder coated/painted to a colour of your choice.

If the top coat is damaged then it will not rust. If the galvanisation is damaged then it can self heal.
