We've got a 30 year old Thermobile at work, they're still pretty much the same (and you can get parts for the old ones).
It runs on waste oil and just does its thing. This time of year it's lit at 7AM and then runs all day. The only thing is the regs are changing for them (think it's just for waste ones) in the spring so we're going to be getting rid of it. We've got loads of spare waste heat on site anyway and some machinery that uses waste oil for a sort of total loss lubrication system, so we're changing how we heat the workshop. Direct heating with any fuel will cause condensation unless you're piping the combustion products outside. A diesel burner should work fine on heating oil too, so you should be able to use whatever is cheaper out of red diesel and heating oil. Our waste oil burner (because it's a bit ancient) struggles on pure diesel because it's too thin, so we have to run at least 50% gloopy stuff. Edit: and I'd stay clear of LPG. Per kWh it's more expensive and you're tied to the supplier that owns your tank (if you're buying bulk gas anyway). It is a little simpler and cleaner but not worth it IMO. |
