Hi All

I know and understand this issue is considered to be one of the points of water ingress but I have raised a complaint with JLR customer care of health and safety as this is allowing fumes from the engine compartment to enter the cabin!

Still having to go through the same process via a dealer, however frustrating it is.

Will let you know what if any progress I make.

It is curious how it seems to be a recent problem only. On my '07 these parts fit perfectly and there is no gap in the joint at all.

So given that all the parts are the same, how come some are such a terrible fit? I would have thought that careful assembly should improve the fit.

They are definitely not all like that!

Same issue as mentioned by others, on my last visit to the dealers, now using Shuckers of Ludlow, they doubled up on the foam gasket and I now have a good seal between the intake and heater head unit..... at long last. As to whether my foot well water leak has been cured only time will tell.....

Apart from doubling up on the gasket - has anyone got any other solutions to this?

I have seen this other thread, but not sure if the part mentioned in the picture works on a puma.
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47380....twell+leak

I have a leak on the passenger footwell mat, but only in severe downpours (& only happened after about 8months of ownership) - I am sure that its coming in via the engine bay/under the bonnet and that gasket is soaking wet. I can get my finger in the gap along the top - the parts are not held together firmly at all.

I was thinking about a second gasket or taping along the top. and maybe adding another one of those plastic water deflectors that pumas have at the top sides of the engine bay - a bit further down.

must be a better solution??

I've had a leak via the air intake grill which appears to have been sorted by doubling up on the said gasket..... However I have a further leak which appears occasionally and as shown in the photo.... removing the speaker housing I traced the leak to windscreen where the vin label is mounted. I have packed some kitchen roll down there and it comes back soaked but stops the leak into the foot well.... There is no obvious place water is entering on the wind screen gasket.... It is going back to the dealers under warranty on Monday week..

I found poking around the other day I have this issue too.
Does anyone have the P/N for doubling up the gasket or did you go for a homemade solution?

I think it has been the source of a bit of a leak on mine, as well as poor efficiency in use of the cold air duct.
Never seemed as cool as it should be which I noticed, as well as one of the drain plugs is missing and the remaining drain plug was blocked.
So it's drawing in more warm air than cool!

Advice welcome from those who cured it if possible please.
LR I wouldn't even contemplate speaking to on such things..

I done mine today, it done the job and is much better inc replacing a missing drain valve too.
Gasket on gasket isn't a 100% perfect fit, but it's 99% better than it was, and putting my hand around with the fan on full with the dual gasket I couldn't tell any airflow leakage.
And for the first time you can feel and hear airflow being pulled in from the wingtop vent.
No wonder it was drawing in warm air.

Steve, how did you manage to fit the extra seal?
Mine has a gap, on the bottom and inside edge.
I've looked at doing the same but the space available is extremely limited, even with loosening the the ducting from the wing. Did you remove the blower or entire wing, but seems like it is a huge job either way? Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Hi All

I am in contact with L/R customer care in relation to the issue of poor fitting cabin air intake duct that's fitted to the wing and the cabin blower motor, mounted in the engine bay on the bulkhead.

The issue is know, and it has been discussed here but would like Jaguar Land Rover to understand how widespread it really is.

http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic47380.html

If we can show to JLR how widespread the issue is with some on numbers it may spur them into some action !!

The problem appears to be on models after the 2012 puma model revision as far as I know and it's the cabin air intake duct that's fitted inside the wing on the passenger side of a RHD vehicle is a poor fit to the cabin blower motor, fitted to the bulk head in the engine bay.

To check your vehicle (engine cold) open the bonnet and from the passenger side RHD, just to the right of the wing top air intake look down into the engine bay.

You should see a black plastic duct that comes from the wing top air intake and if you follow it down and to the right it joins to the cabin blower motor.

At the joint of the air intake duct and the blower motor you should see a gray foam rubber sealing gasket between 5-15mm thick, this is area of the issue.

If you have a similar problem you will probably wont be able to see a gap between the air intake duct and the blower motor or if they are miss aligned from this angle.

This is my Vehicle and appears to be OK from this view.

Make sure the engine its not hot as your hand will be close to the heater hoses.

If you run your fingers around the gray foam gasket away from you towards the the engine, feeling for any gaps or misalignment all the way around the joint of the air intake duct and the blower motor.

If you find a gap it should look a bit like this.

If you do find that you have the same issue Please post a reply here that you have the same issue along with your vehicle model year.

I will pass on the results as a small cross section of Defender owners to the L/R customer care manager I am dealing with and hopefully they will be more responsive, also our very own site Land Rover Customer Relations can review the results.

Thanks in anticipation

Did you end up solving this? and did it solve any water ingress? I have just some across this and I have the exact same issue

Had a look at mine today and the same, big gaps all round the engine side. I had noticed the noise coming in but just assumed it was normal landy stuff. I attempted to get the duct out and put extra gasket on by there was no way it was coming out. Instead, I wedged it right in place and got the heat gun around the duct then let it cool. It’s a lot better but still not perfect so will have another go next weekend.

It’s not as tight as I’d like, but it is sealed all the way around. There is now quite a kink in the duct in order to line it up.
