SMD LED's generally have a dispersed light output. It is SMD LED's (they look like electronic chips) in RDX or Wipac indicator / obligatory light sets etc.

Regular LEDs are more directional, (they are dome shaped, like a mini bulb) my Wipac light is the same as in the FF link on this thread and disperses bright white light.

The Le Perei, Mobilecentre type version is the regular type LED type which I found rubbish.
It's bright but blue like colour tone, and shines more on the floor / bumperette than the actual plate!

Plus about 3x LED's of 5 or 6 failed on first using it. Rolling Eyes

Aggravating part is, sellers won't tell you the LED type.

The lense on the good one with SMD's is slightly frosted. (Identical to the FF link photo)

The other rubbish one is clear and you can see the rubbish little LED's through the lense.

That's just my experience though.

Thumbs Up

As VT has said why changing from bulb's to led's. LED's are much better and because they are brighter you are seen easier Thumbs Up 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

I must be fortunate then… In nearly fifty years of LR ownership the number of bulbs I've had to replace can be counted if not on one hand then definitely two: I've broken more half-shafts than bulbs.

I guess I'll continue wasting my own “bling” money on boat gizmos that I don't really need.

Believe it or not this has been invaluable in my search for an LED number plate light to go with my set of Wipac coloured LED's due to arrive any time now Smile

I wanted Wipac but it has no ridge down the top like the OEM item but I am certainly not now planning simply to put LED bulbs in the original fitting. So, I guess the choice is MUD, RDX or Wipac.

Apparently Wipac are now doing LED side repeaters but haven't seen any for sale. Any comments on availability or what complements the classic look best?

Thumbs Up Rob

I'm pretty sure the newer type comes with the wires attached, terminating in a two way connector which sits inside the rear cover or speaker.

So, can someone kindly explain how I get this later type of connector apart and where to source a new male connector so that I don't need to cut the wires? Embarassed

I'm not sure why you want to take the later connector apart but if you want to add a connector to a unit with bare wires then look for Econoseal on eBay. I'm not sure, off hand, if you'd need the male or female type. I suspect the former but it's worth checking what the existing one is plugged into inside the rear light cover.

Single two pin Econoseal connectors are available for about £3. They come as a kit with two pins, seals and the components of the connector body that clip together. As it happens, I've just been adding these connectors to my 90 to replace the old bullet connectors and fit newer lights. This is a female tail that I made as part of the conversion:

The connector pins need to be crimped onto the wires and they're pretty small. It can be done by hand if you're careful but, as I was planning to do the whole vehicle, I invested in the proper crimp tool, which makes it very easy:

The numberplate lamp doesn't use an Econoseal, it uses a small Sumitomo connector. HM Sealed series I think. 2 way female.

I think PaulMc does them?  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

LRA, thanks for your reply, but like Martin says mine is not Econoseal, so thanks very much for clarifying Martin. It was dark and no time to retry in better light but there must be a knack to separating the two halves? I just want to unplug to remove original number plate light so I can add a connector to the bare wires on the new LED light so I don't have to cut the wires. Sorry, do not know who is PaulMc?

I think it's this one (HM series not MT): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201713700141

If I remember correctly there is a little latch/clip which needs to be levered up to allow the two parts to come apart.

You can see the clip sticking out here (4 pin version but the same applies to 2 pin):

Light side is the female connector as above. See:

The vehicle side wiring is fitted with the chunkier male connector.

This is definitely the case as the smaller female connector fits through the hole for the wiring in the body panel. The male does not.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
