I had looked at replacing the boxer setup on my Bowler with a Weber 500 but decided against it as some of the other guys using them were having problems with getting them to run reliably off road 2014 110 2.2TDCi XS Station wagon

I had an Edelbrock 500 and it was great except on very steep inclines where it would stall. I bought some spring-loaded off road needles, but never got around to fitting them.
I also found that you could get vapour lock where the petrol in the bowls would boil. I fitted a phenolic spacer to lift the carb off the engine block and insulate it, this seemed to help. |

Interesting, never heard of either of those problems. Is the petrol boiling a problem caused by off roading too or just running for long periods of time? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

I've had no experience of the Weber Edelbrock set up, but can I ask why you are thinking of going down this route?
More power? better MPG? or are you having problems with the SU's? |

Petrol boiling only happened on a few occasions. Once was very hot day off roading in sand, high revs, low speed, the other was sitting in traffic queue for Eurotunnel on a hot day, it stalled at the ticket booth and I had to get the guy to help me push it out of the way. Whilst waiting for the Eurotunnel tow truck it cooled down enough to restart and I managed to drive off.
Adding the 10mm-ish thick insulating spacer was enough to stop it happening again. |

More power would be the main reason, heard of people getting 20-30 horses from it. Don't want fuel injection also. It would also be nice to have one carburettor so balancing is no longer required.
Did it run normally after you were able to drive off? Was the engine temperature too high on the fuel gauge? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon 1998 Land Rover Defender 110 County Station Wagon ~ Sold 1995 Land Rover Defender 110 V8 Station Wagon ~ Sold 1985 Land Rover 110 ex mod project Tithonus ~ Sold |

And the sound, the throaty induction roar as the secondaries open up was wonderful.
It drove perfectly after it had cooled down a little and wasn't showing in the red zone on the temp gauge. Initially I had overheating problems, but added new viscous coupling for fan, had the exhaust manifolds zircotech coated and changed the temp sender and gauge for VDO so I got a better idea of what actual temps were. Petrol boiling in carbs seemed to be a heat soak thing, so normal heat from engine was enough to boil petrol in traffic. The spacer sorted it out and was simple to fit. I was concerned that there would be enough room under the bonnet, but it was fine. |

Doesn't sound like a deal breaking problem then, do you have any pictures of the setup? 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

Only just found this thread.
My old cobra had an Eddie in it. A great carb to work on & very adjustable but a 500cfm would certainly very much overfuel a standard 3.5 in a low state of tune. John Eales used to use SU's right upto 250bhp & if they are jetted right, I am sure they are your best bet as they work well on all sorts of inclines Richard Defender 90 SVX Last edited by muddypaws on 14th Dec 2016 2:07pm. At the price the conversion kits cost it wouldn't be something I could do any time soon anyway. If my problems are stemming from the su carburettors then it'll be easier to just get a new pair. Also that engine bay looks fantastic muddypaws 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon
