Soundproofing/de-resonance/insulating the roof
Having read through various soundproofing threads, I've noticed that some people use two layers of the aluminium/butil based type sound proofing like silent coat that I've just purchased and am now half way through fitting.
Thinking about it, obviously the more material up there, the quieter it'll be, but surely, this sort of soundproofing is to reduce the drumming and resonating of a panel and then other material like foam to do the sound absorbing, which I'm also doing.
Basically what I'm asking is, is it worth me covering the roof twice with the silent coat and then a layer of closed cell foam, or will one layer of the silent coat be enough as, as long as it's there it doing the job, and then add the foam afterwards?
Hope all this makes sense Confused

Hi, I have found that one coat of silent coat is enough. I previously did a classic mini and more recently my defender. As you said, the bitumen coat to kill the resonance and the closed cell foam to absorb any other noise. Theoretically the bitumen coat doesn't need to cover the entire panel but it does look better Very Happy

Brilliant, thank you, I can use the left over bits elsewhere then.
Did you find it makes much of a difference doing the roof?

I did two layers on mine which does make a bigger difference but one layer will be fine. I also added two layers of ccf and it's a lot quieter when driving now. Ray

Cheers Ray, that's good to know, cut fingers won't be in vein then! Laughing I suppose it makes sence that the thicker the layers and the more of them the more effective it will be. I've got 12mm closed cell foam to go on top of the 2mm silent coat too.

I've found every little helps especially on the bigger panels. Whilst I did the whole of the mini interior with SC I haven't done in the rear of the defender as the paintwork was so nice so I am putting up with some noise. I fitted a full rubber mat over the load floor and wheel arches and put Mud stuff side panels on. I stuck some SC under the front headlining and round the bulkhead, seat box and inside the door panels then fitted the moulded mat from Exmoor trim.

I did my entire roof with Skinz and the 6mm foam. after a few months i was fitting the overhead DVD and the headliner had to come down, 90% of the sound proofing have peeled away. The heat on the inner surface of the roof was surprising and the black backing was so soft. Only that i was adding the DVD i would NEVER have known so just be aware. I replaced it all with dynamat which is a thinner layer and after a recent check its all still in place. Andy

Cheers Andy, I'll steer clear of that skinz stuff. I'm hoping the silent coat will do the job, I've read good things about it.

I'm using silent coat 2mm on mine with 8mm foam (around the car parts)

I've yet to do the roof...

It worried me taking the headlining off... and getting it back on Sad

Is it an ok job?

Easy to take off, slightly awkward to handle by yourself and put back on. 2nd pair of hands helps.

Suggest you buy replacement fir-tree clips before you start as you are bound to break some.

Got all the soundproofing in on the roof, with a bit spare to do the 2nd row foot well and front foot wells. we shall see how much of a difference it has made tomorrow.

i used 2mm silent coat, and doubled up in centre of panels, then auto grade 3m thinsulate Thumbs Up

worked a treat, used to sound like a 747 on take off at 70 mph.

now sounds more like 737!!!! Laughing

Ignoring we have the black "premium" headlining...i dont see any value in doing the roof and wouldnt waste time dropping the headlining...but the black headlining is definitely thicker than the standard Mike
