Rear Wiper Switch blowing fuse
Having a bit of confusion over this electrical issue, so thought I'd see what others thought?

Spent some time today fitting a Hawk central locking kit, and following a succesfull install on the drivers door I then realised the fuel/temp gauge and indicators had stopped working. After seeing that these were on the same fuse, I had a quick check and as expected that fuse had gone. At first I thought coincidence, so replaced the fuse but it blew the moment I turned the ignition on...

So I then presumed I'd got something wrong with the central locking kit, and disconnected that to test again. But it then blew the replacement fuse. At this point I stopped trying to guess what it might be and just disconnected everything related to that fuse (indicators, temp guage, fuel guage, rear wipers). Upon plugging them back in one at a time (with ignition on), I got all but the rear wiper switch connected. The moment I connected that, the fuse blew!

For now I've removed the rear wiper switch for testing, and everything else is working fine (incl. central locking kit). Given I've not done anything with the rear wiper switch, is it just a coincidence that somethings given up inside it to cause it to short out? I've read about the fuse blowing when trying to activate the wiper (dodgy wiring, or siezed motor spindle), but this is happening the moment the ignition is turned on...

Any ideas would be greatly welcomed! At the moment I'm not sure what to test, and would rather not just buy a new switch and find it still has the problem.

1. disconnect fuse for rear wiper motor and wash pump and test the cct, do you multi meter to hand

2. disconnect rear wiper motor and wash pump one at time and test the cct

First place I'd look would be the wiper feed at the rear door where it goes through the ribbed rubber section, check for cracked insulation. More common on the rear passenger doors but also happens on the front doors. Ironically bearing in mind the work you have just done is that it usually affects the central locking on the affected door.

Well, the good news is everything is now working again. The less than good news is that I'm not entirely sure how...

Disconnected washer pump and rear motor, then tested all the circuits. Multi meter wasn't showing any short circuits, so I then started reconnecting things one at a time. End result was everything connected, ignition on, and no blown fuse!

I have moved the earthing point for the new centra locking just in case, but given it blew yesterday even with that disconnected I'm not sure whether that was the cause/fix. It may just be some dodgy wires somewhere that I've resolved by unplugging/plugging everything.

I'll keep an eye out for it in the future, and do a more thorough investigation of all the wiring when I get a chance.

Thanks for the help everyone, the wiring diagram was particularly useful!
