Hi folks,
I've been to the dealer for the yearly routine maintenance, mileage 18000km, MY 2013. I had the oil changed (invoice says 3,5L GEAROIL 75W90 SYNT GL5) and I guess they also had the rear diff oil changed. Since then: small leakage spotted... Not a lot and continuous, just a couple of drops after each time I got on the road. Click image to enlarge I also has a lot of grease all around the bottom of the car and on the engine and exhaust pipe. It's not a big issue but when I've driven and park the car, I think that's something caught fire underneath my car... burned grease smell... Can one overfill the rear diff causing the leak? Or does it have any seals that might be damaged or broken??? I've book a visit to the dealer on Monday, but could anyone give some thoughts? puma 2.2 MY2013 [:O]===[O:] |

And that's the grease that spreads after I've been driving....

I'd be inclined to check the breather on top of the axle, always seems peculiar when a fault comes to light after a service. I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Take the grease as reassurance they put plenty in - quite a common job to be "missed". The diff oil leak may well be due to a blocked breather but my bet is the seal was already passed its best and the oil level was low. Now, with the correct amount of oil the leak is showing up.
Have you tried removing the filler plug on level ground and finger-dipping to see where the leve is? |

Mine has leaked on the rear 3 times in total now, not due to a blocked breather not once.
Just seems the seal fails, new flange didn't help either. Most recent fix was new seal only and D44 have done it and touch wood everything seems good now. As suggested the grease is just centrifugal force splatter grease from prop and flanges. But yes, three leaks in 50k miles. Seems to be the rear diff pinion oil seal on a 90 rear axle. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Concerning the grease: I'm not worried, I've received a 'waxoil' treatment for free .... well, not really for free
The leak: that's worrying a bit more. I'll check the breather plug tomorrow but looking at the spot where the oil seams to come from, it's seems it will definitely be the seal that's damaged. Anyone knowing how long such a seal is meant to last? 18000km seems a bit fast to get such troubles??? puma 2.2 MY2013 [:O]===[O:] |

Vmesch,
I had that rear diff seal blow once on the way from Geneva to Antwerp, a good 4 years ago now. Land Rover Metropool in Merksem expertly replaced it, and all is still fine today. Eric Edit - you have a 2013 model, yes? So probably out of the 3 years factory warranty, but not sure if you do or do not have bought the extended warranty. Asking, because at the time of that leak on mine I had bought the extended warranty here in Switzerland, and the entire invoice of Land Rover Metropool was reimbursed to me by my Swiss extended warranty. Hi Ericvv,
thanks for your info. I had the repair at the dealer and it has been done under warranty (MY2013 but bought in 2014, so still within the three-years warranty). I've asked up some details, but they already told it was just the seal that had to be replaced. But still a bit confused about this issue after such a low milage and no real hard offroad driving.... Can anyone tell me what milage would be acceptable? puma 2.2 MY2013 [:O]===[O:] |
