Did the previous two vehicles require multiple engines also, or did they survive?

The TD5 did not have engine replacements but did used to eat headgaskets, almost a service item defiantly every 20thou. That Land Rover could have lasted longer but was stolen and recovered back to me but had been chassed by the police round the Birmingham motorway network till the scumbag dropped it into the arnco on a bend (Land Rovers cant take exits at 90mph) (he found out the hard way) Any way after having that sort of treatment it was never the same again and was just a constant battle overheating, blowing hoses off, headgaskets, turbo problems so I got the first puma a 57 plate 2.4.

That had an engine at 36 thou oil pump problem, the relief valve stayed shut filled the head up with oil hydraulicked the pistons on the A303 at 70mph big bang. Lots of oil smoke and fire. The 2.4 suffered constant problems with egr valves, air flow meters and turbo manifold gaskets. This vehicle is still going strong as the Ladybird company chairman now has it on his farm and tows his boat to Cornwall with it every year and occasionally takes it to his Gite in France.

The 2.2 apart from the engines has been the least problematic of them all and I put that down to the stringent service regime I now have been doing for the last 100thou 6thou oil drop and filter 12 thou full service oil and all filters. I use good oil as well Millers C1 low sap its good for the dpf, never had a dpf warning light on since using it and I sit in London and M25 traffic a lot. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

The old 200tdi engines go 200k with little fuss and little speed, modern engines seem give out the power but regular have catastrophic failures, my friends 2012 range rover has done 230k towing a trailer but engine failed at 70k ..they don't make them like they use to !

It's nice to see the 2.2 is capable of high mileages, but the three engines is a bit worrying! Hopefully oil changes every 6k miles should help with that! Thumbs Up James

Netherlands 2009 Defender 130 Puma 2.4 HCPU Fuji White
Thats horrible!
I have used a Defender 110 300TDI as a tow car for our company. Mostly higway miles through all of Europe with a 3 tonne trailer. Sold it with 675000km's on it. Original engine, never rebuild. Only new injectors around 400.000. Even the original turbo and headgasket. A few clutches, a gearbox and some vaccuum pumps.

I've replaced that with a D2 TD5, sold it at 550000 km's, no problems except for a gearbox at 250K, the aschroft one lasted only for 50K after that.

Replaced it with a D3 TDV6 and sold that at 600.000. Only a EGR and some supsension arms. And a light of the airsuspension always on. But suspension worked OK. O.. and a alternator.

Now a 130 2.4 at 220000, that's the worst until now. It smokes when we start it, several VCV valves, and it just doesn't sound right, but no major problems until now, but I'm always affraid to break down for some reason. but we don't make many miles now anymore..
