I had the same low mileage problem with mine lighting up about six weeks before the first service. Just ignored it till closer to the annual service.I always go to the main dealer for the first three year period. The 1st service is more than just an oil/ filter change and also includes the paintwork inspection, which is required for you to claim when you experience the usual corrosion problems.

Tim, I understand with the 2.2 and its DPF cleaning cycles, the oil service light may come on once a certain % of diesel fuel gets mixed in the engine oil, at which time the engine oil should be replaced to assure proper lubrication. If I'm correct probably not a good idea to wait until you reach a higher mileage.

completely agree Eric, However I'm intending to change the oil and filter NOW and do a 1st service next year.

I've decided I'll get my 2.2 properly serviced at the recommended interval and then change the oil and filter myself at half intervals. I understand from Pete Bell regular oil changes are paramount. James

Hi Tim,
I'm guessing because you mention 1st service, your 90 must be less than a year old. So my only concern would be invalidating the warranty if you changed the oil & filter yourself. I don't know if the oil change warning is stored somewhere in the ECU and/or if you reset it, if this is also recorded. Even if you used LR parts, what would happen if the engine failed and needed a warranty claim? Would the fact that it had been changed give enough wriggle room for LR to decline a claim? In no way am I scaremongering, just wondering if LR could detect that the oil change warning had been reset. If not, I would definitely do the job myself and save the stealer fees. Hopefully someone with a better knowledge of the ECU system can comment. |

You can change the oil and filter every week if you like. So long as the oil and filter meet the Land Rover specs you will be O.K. warranty wise. Speaking from personal experience regarding this. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

I change my oil every 6,000 miles, in-between going to the dealership for annual / 12k service. The oil service message appears when the ECU calculates that there is 7% diesel in the oil, based solely on counting the number of active DPF regeneration cycles. I saw it once before 12k, so 2,400 miles seems very short.
Are you doing just very short journeys? The active DPF regeneration cycle is quite aggressive on a Defender, specifically to prevent the DPF becoming blocked, so you could need to get the oil changed much more frequently if just driving off-road at lower speeds for example. If not, then I think I would take it in just to find out why it's come on so soon. There could be something amiss if it's come on after such a low mileage. Otherwise get a genuine filter and the right Ford spec oil for £60 and DIY in 30 minutes. Or pay a VAT registered garage to do it and keep the proof. There is no need to pay dealer prices for an oil change. The dealer I use wasn't bothered by the oil service message or DIY oil changes as long as they do the annual service. If you do a DIY oil change, put the oil catch tray a lot further back than you think! The oil is very thin and shoots back about 2ft behind the sump (behind the gearbox crossmember). |

My understanding is that to retain cover during the 3 year warranty period, servicing is every 12 months or 12k miles, whichever comes first. If your Defender is 1 year old, it will need a service, even if less than 3k miles in the last year. My 65 plate showed an oil change due at less than 6k, despite 40% of those miles being long 270 mile motorway runs at up to 3000 revs. You can change the oil & filter & reset the warning, there is a thread on here, ignition on & hold down brake & accelerator for x seconds - it works! My biggest moan is the inflated cost of the first service,£ 436 quoted and done after haggling & dealer pretending to value my custom for £390. Even at £100 + VAT per hour labour rate, that feels like robbery for the work carried out, so effectively paying through the nose for year 2 of warranty. My older Def is well looked after at a good indie garage for £30 ph + vat! I have told the stealer that I will take a view on using them for the second service at £700 +, and they may not see my vehicle or business again & sod the warranty cover into year 3. Landrover have moved away from their roots & dealers have adopted the German "premium" brands' pricing & showroom arrogance towards customer. Keep it simple - poverty spec.
