Low fuel light

Anybody know how this is triggered? Mine seems to come on randomly so I need to do a bit of fault finding.

Oh, and yes it has got fuel in it! Filled it up yesterday and light went out. Started it today and light came on again

Usually there is a third spade connector on the fuel level sender that triggers the light based on level. A wire from that to the light is the usual setup.

However some models have a small printed circuit board taped up in the loom that interprets the fuel level signal and controls the light, to which it is connected. Mine (1992) had that, but I ripped it out when I converted to Td5 clocks.

Ah, thanks for that. Mines a '92 as well and there are only two wires to the tank sender, which suggests other electrickery at work. I've had all of the dash in bits, so it could just be a duff connection somewhere, but I'd like to narrow it down a bit.

Where abouts in the loom should I be looking for the circuit? Darren

If I recall correctly the PCB wotsit was behind the clocks somewhere.

Try following the wire from the low fuel light itself back into the loom if you can.

Ok, thanks, I'll take a look.

Ironically, I may have accidentally found the problem though. Just been out for a run (fish & chips

) and I had trouble starting it. Turn the key to start and it would fire but die as the key was released from the start position. All of the dash lights died, too. However, a bit of key jiggling and it started straight away, which tells me that the ignition switch is worn. Given the way that the fuel light seems to reset after starting, it may be related.

Anyway, fitting a new ignition switch is now in my future. Darren
