We broke the rear anti roll bar on the red 110 many years ago in Scandinavia..
The broken ARB was removed and never replaced. Has gone through many MOT's without issue, has covered many 10's of thousand of miles since with no issue. Apparently people following us says the rear end moves around a bit more then normal but no problems driving it. So I would say yes you can drive without it. Brendan |

Thanks, good to know.
It'd just be a quick drive down to the beach on a quiet day anyway (lot's of speed bumps which usually trigger the 'crink' noise) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

It may not be relevant given your location but a few years ago the MoT rules changed here. If the vehicle had anti roll bars fitted at the factory then they must be fitted for the test.
However given Land Rovers history of record keeping I suspect most Defenders will get away with it. Particularly the older ones. Ed 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

Many vehicles left the factory without them, and it won't cause any problems at all to run with it disconnected or removed.
I don't actually believe that your average MOT Johnny would have a clue if it should be there or not on a Defender. Over the years mine's been MOTed with neither, with the rear only, and with both fitted, without any issues. |

So what does it actually do that the other parts components manage without?
And what situations do they come in to play? Cornering roll (no camber but grip for instance), or rolling while driving on a slant (or both?) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants... |

The ARB is to contain body roll while cornering. It will have some small effect on side slopes but that is not its purpose. Front and rear anti roll bars can be used to trim on limit handling balance too (not really a concern in a defender). Adding or stiffening a rear arb increases oversteer, adding or stiffening a front arb increases under steer.
It is commonly stated that arbs reduce articulation, but in principle they don't. They increase the force required to reach a given amount of articulation and if they are stiff enough the weight of the car might not be able to overcome this which might reduce the articulation in practice. This could be sorted out with a bag of cement in the boot. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS |

That's because the Testers you've used have a brain. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Ok, so removing roll bar I find one of the rubber boot/seals has a small cut in it and the ball is now dry, corroded and loose:
Click image to enlarge The other I managed to ruin the thread in removing the dang split pin (helpfully painted in by previous owners 'black spray paint maintenance regime') - see above both boots cut well open for comparison... Spares are in the mail. Anyway, so driving without roll bar: 'cronk' hrrrm , so I pull off both rear shocks and find the upper bushes are loose and the lower ones are mishapen - replace all (wot a job getting the top ones out and in!) then take it for a drive: 'cronk' hrrrrrm * 2 Maybe it's the brakes?? I remove the shims and go direct on to the (newish) Ferodo pads that have a gunky backing that does the same job as the shims anyway. ahhhhh, much less 'cronk' this time... (just a hint on occasion, that I only hear because I'm so tuned to listen for it now) woohoo! Theory is the pistons have nicely located themselves 'in' the gunky backing, which provides resistance to the pads moving anything but in and out - as opposed to up and down (the 'cronk' maker). I'm currently using the style of pin with the springs along the pin axis, but I've ordered these guys to see what happens also: Funny how the fix was so simple and yet I found a bunch of other stuff to attend to anyway... @ Brendan, have a 2 week old 110 ARB if you'd like it - FOC to you of course.
Let me know if you'd like it, just postage for you. James |

Out of interest, how did you come about a spare? Are you rolling without? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I take mine off and throw them away. Worked for my jeep despite all the naysayers predicting loss of control and wiping out a bus stop full of school kids (bloody Americans!)

Mine didn't come with any anti roll bars but the brackets on the chassis were there so I fitted some (as most of my driving is on road) they certainly take out a lot of roll!!! Ray

Likewise. My County-spec DCPU left the factory without ARBs, and in general I prefer it that way. Since however most of its considerable mileage is on the road, I have a substantial roofrack, and the vehicle is almost always well laden, I fitted ARBs front and rear. It has certainly improved the road manners. It has had negligible effect on off-raod performance, but this may be influenced by a non-standard and significantly enhanced driveline.
A Defender with a couple of hundred kilos on the roof and no ARBs rolls in a quite spectacular way on corners! |

I've been running without on my 110 due to PO having lift kit I'm now running standard set up and plan to re fit anti roll bar with new fixings.I personally think there is less body roll with them fitted with standard set up.
