United Kingdom 1994 Defender 90 200 Tdi HT Portofino Red
Rear noise/vibration Defender 90
Evening,

Getting a bit of a 'whump, whump' around 50-55 in 5th. Not obvious in 4th but that could just be engine noise smothering it. Both rear wheel bearings replaced in the last 12 months and rear prop in the last 3 years. It's not had anything more than a bit of greenlaning in that time and there is no visible damage.
It's not obvious in other gears or speeds but is speed linked so it speeds up the faster you go so it sounds rotational. Rear diff oil changed about 12 months ago and I'm doing about 2000 miles p/a as it's just my hobby.
The noise can be felt through the seat, appears to generate from the rear and is not felt through the pedals or steering wheel.
Previously I'd have thought a rear wheel balance issue and I intend to swap the fronts to rears diagonally this weekend to try and check this. However, thought I'd ask here in case it's a well known issue and can point me to a specific area.
Personally I think the rear prop may be out of balance but I'm unaware of who still does this type of job so any recommendations gratefully received. If the wheel change doesn't work I guess I'll take the rear prop off and run it to check that way but if anyone can shed some light on this and save me a bit of work that would be great!

1993 last of the 200tdi's 90 hardtop, manual with rear discs. Last two MOT's passed with no advisories.

Cheers in advance

Does sound a bit like it is labouring i.e. in too high a gear causing the prop shaft is "flex". I have the R380 gearbox fitted to a 96 300 Tdi and find it difficult to get into 5th unless at speeds of 50+(on motorways etc) otherwise it labours and produces a similar noise. Jeff

If your noise/vibration turns out to be prophaft related, I have used a company in Feltham Middlesex in past years and they were reliable and efficient, close to M25 junc 14.

I have no connection with them other than as a customer.

They're called Propshaft Services they make, repair and balance propshafts of all descriptions.

Tel. 08443348655

Hope this helps.

Hi JCP
Did you get to the bottom of this? I have the same thing. All my underneath has been rebuilt, i can't find any movement in the UJ's and I've had my wheels balanced.
Thanks
Julia
